Santa Barbara Auto Group is pleased to share that the 2013 Acura TL has been awarded the highest possible safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Earning an IIHS “Top Safety Pick +” designation, the 2013 Acura TL is officially one of the safest vehicles in its class.
Acura TL First to Earn Good Ranking in New Test
The IIHS has recently applied more stringent testing guidelines which now include the new small overlap frontal crash test, and the 2013 Acura TL is among one of the first cars to receive the highest rating under the revised system. The small overlap frontal crash test is designed to gauge the safety of a vehicle in the instance of a frontal impact (such as a collision with a tree) when only 25% of the front structure is engaged by the opposing object and the car is moving at an approximate speed of 40mph. This focuses stress on a narrow section of the front of the vehicle, outside the side frame, to test cabin structure strength. According to a 2009 study by the IIHS, small overlap crashes accounted for almost twenty-five percent of fatal or serious-injury frontal crashes. The IIHS has reported that the 2013 Acura TL was the first of two vehicles to earn a “good” ranking in the new small overlap frontal crash test. 
Acura Earns High Marks for Safety
Acura was also acknowledged for four other high-performing vehicles, including the Acura ILX, TSX, MDX, and RDX which all received the IIHS ranking of “good” in all four testing categories, including the more rigorous roof-strength test, resulting in an overall “Top Safety Pick” ranking.
The recent rankings are evidence of the success of Acura’s “Safety through Innovation” initiative. This initiative is based on Acura’s commitment to make safety a top element in every new vehicle they company builds. As part of this, Acura is in the process of incorporating Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ II body structure to all new or fully redesigned models. It is an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and frontal crash compatibility. This includes a reinforced front frame structure which provides increased protection for passengers through more effective frontal crash energy management. The design utilizes a series of connected structure elements which disburse crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle to help reduce the forces which act upon the front passengers in the event of a collision. This advanced engineering is a major reason the cars received a “good” ranking in the frontal small overlap crash testing from the latest IIHS safety tests.

Currently all models in the 2013 Acura line-up are built with Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ and other standard safety equipment including Vehicle Stability Assist® with traction control ABS, front-side airbags, dual-stage/multiple threshold front airbags, side curtain airbags for all outboard seating. They also include front seatbelts with automatic tension adjustment and load limiters, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and Daytime Running Lights.
