Tecore Networks Provides Lifesaving Communications in Yakutat, Alaska

Tecore Networks, a global supplier of multi-technology 2G, 3G and 4G mobile network infrastructure, announced today that its Network in a Box (NIB) System in Yakutat, Alaska deployed just months prior by Cordova Wireless provided the lifesaving communications for two stranded hunters.

What began as a typical hunting trip for two brothers to an isolated reef in Yakutat Bay nearly turned tragic when the anchor of their skiff gave way and the boat started to drift out to sea. After a failed attempt to reclaim their boat from the icy water, the water soaked brothers thought they were out of options. As the tide rose across the reef, they soon realized they had a cell phone with them (purchased just days prior to the trip). Once they climbed to the highest location on the reef they were able to place the life saving call to their family. Within the hour help arrived and they were transported back to safety.

"It was the most amazing feeling on the planet, we thought we were going to die, but that cell phone saved our lives," said survivor Vernon Schumacher in a news article published by the Cordova Times.

“While ubiquitous wireless coverage is expected in today’s urban and suburban areas, coverage in the far reaches of rural America still faces challenges today—and providing this service can sometimes be a matter of life and death for residents,” said Jay Salkini, CEO of Tecore Networks,. “Our cutting-edge, rugged networks are now capable of overcoming the extreme challenges presented by austere environments such as rural Alaska and we are very pleased to be able to level the wireless playing field and make a difference in the lives of the people living in more remote areas.”

“Cordova Wireless Communications (CWC) is very happy to provide the people of Yakutat with the first wireless service the community has ever had. We knew our service would save lives, for that is the nature of the use of cell phones in rural Alaska. CWC is now reliant on regulatory agencies both State and Federal to receive certifications that will allow CWC to continue to provide service in the Yakutat service area,” said Paul Kelly, CEO and GM of Cordova.

While the wireless industry has shifted its focus to small cells and increased throughput, Tecore has maintained a focus to build systems and architectures that deliver the same capabilities and services available in highly populated areas to the rural and remote locations of America and around the world.

Tecore’s NIB is a compact and complete mobile communication core and RAN system designed to cost-effectively serve hundreds to several thousand subscribers, operating as an extension of an operator’s main network but capable of functioning independently in the event of backhaul issues. Its platform delivers game changing innovations for 4G HSPA+ and LTE network deployments. The NIB is built on its award winning network-in-a-box technology enabling ubiquitous service at the edge while optimizing bandwidth utilization. The NIB maximizes network availability in harsh or rural and remote deployments by leveraging key Tecore technology providing continued local operation when connectivity is lost with the rest of the network.

As you know, enterprise IT conversation over the past year have often centered upon the open-source Kubernetes container orchestration system. In fact, Kubernetes has emerged as the key technology -- and even primary platform -- of cloud migrations for a wide variety of organizations. Kubernetes is critical to forward-looking enterprises that continue to push their IT infrastructures toward maximum functionality, scalability, and flexibility.
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio a...
