Joyent Moves To Take On Amazon

CEO Henry Wasik claims to be growing roughly 120% a year, three times the market

Joyent, one of the original infrastructure clouds that set up about the same time as Amazon Web Services but without Amazon’s giant fallback cushion, restructured its cloud line Thursday, adding a bunch of new instances that pretty much map to Amazon’s.

It also introduced reserved pricing plans.

One thing Joyent’s not changing, CEO Henry Wasik said emphatically, is the company’s historical focus on high performance.

The company expects customers to discover that the new “pre-fabricated” instances won’t cost more than Amazon’s and might even save them a buck or two.

It figures its reconceived end-to-end elastic compute service will meet the demands of customers of any size, from mobile start-ups to Fortune 50s, offering more flexibility and price/performance control, while delivering an easy migration path from and interoperability with other cloud IaaS providers.

The new configurations, which customers can reportedly boot in minutes and scale up and down as circumstances demand, are available now and include:

  1. Standard, which provides a balanced set of resources and a low-cost platform suited to a wide variety of applications.
  2. High Memory, which offers large memory sizes for high-throughput applications, including database and memory caching apps.
  3. High CPU, which provides proportionally more CPU resources than memory (RAM) and are suited to compute-intensive applications.
  4. High Storage, which delivers proportionally higher storage density per instance, and are suited to applications that benefit from high sequential I/O performance across very large data sets. High Storage instances also provide high levels of CPU, memory and network performance.
  5. High I/O, which provides very high disk I/O performance and are suited to many high-performance database workloads. High I/O instances provide SSD-based local instance storage and high levels of CPU, memory and network performance.

The widgetry matches 13 of the most popular AWS instances and all told there are 58 instances within five families: Standard up to 128GB of RAM; High CPU up to 32 Intel Sandy Bridge threads; High Memory up to 256GB of DRAM; High I//O up to 6TB of SSDs; and High Storage up to 30TB.

In addition, Joyent now has one- and three-year reserved capacity pricing options, which are supposed to drive cloud costs down. With reserved capacity, customers can purchase the high-performance Joyent compute service for a one-time upfront fee and get a “significant” discount on the hourly charge on that instance over the contract term.

Again the pricing is benchmarked against Amazon.

“Our goal is to make our value fully visible to the market while continuing to make the Joyent public cloud easier to use,” Wasik said. “In dramatically expanding our compute products to meet and anticipate the breadth of customers’ needs, we’re reaffirming our commitment to make the Joyent public cloud truly accessible and affordable to any business.”

Joyent is willing to match its proprietary cloud again Amazon’s. It claims to be growing three times the market or roughly 120% a year. It is one of the top five clouds by VM count. It says it is seeing major enterprises deploy multiple apps. Its SLA is supposed to be more rigorous than Amazon’s. It only uses Intel hardware.
