We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.
Starting five months ago, those interested in virtual real estate were
able to register .eu domain names. Recently, hotels.eu and shopping.eu were
sold through the largest domain name marketplace, Sedo. Hotels.eu fetched
250,000 Euros (approximately GBP170,000), while shopping.eu was sold for
150,000 Euros (approximately GBP100,000). Both domain names were purchased by
the same person.
Even though the .eu Top Level Domain (TLD) has been on the market for a
relatively short time, market experts believe that the potential for .eu
domains could rival that of the .com. Despite .com's being the most sought
after domain names (diamond.com and business.com both sold for US$7.5
million, almost GBP4 Million), the recent .eu sales show potential for
Europe's TLD.
Since the release of the .eu, 400 domains have been sold through Sedo.
The average price of .eu domains sold is 2,300 Euros, or GBP1548. Over 2
million .eu domains have been registered. UK citizens have registered over
373,000 .eu domains, placing the United Kingdom second in the number of .eu
registrations, behind Germany.
