Governor General to Visit Newfoundland and Labrador

OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/11/13 -- His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will visit the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador on June 12 and 13, 2013. This visit will be an occasion to recognize community building, to honour acts of volunteerism through the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award and to meet with Canadian Forces members.

"I'm looking forward to returning to Newfoundland and Labrador, where I will be delivering the opening address at the CU Expo in Corner Brook," said His Excellency. "This conference is a wonderful opportunity for community members to work with experienced researchers and for academic researchers to work with knowledgeable community groups to bring about positive change. I believe in the importance of encouraging community involvement which leads to great initiatives and partnerships that I will have the chance to witness first-hand during my visit to the province."

Visit to 5 Wing Goose Bay

As commander-in-chief of Canada, His Excellency will visit and address members of the Canadian Forces and their families at 5 Wing Goose Bay. He will be greeted by Lieutenant-Colonel Michael Ward and an arrival guard.

5 Wing Goose Bay is an air force base conducting a wide variety of operations, including both joint and combined training. Located on the northeast coast of Canada, its strategic location enables 5 Wing to play a key role in protecting the sovereignty of Canada and the air defence of North America.

Hopedale

Visit to Hopedale

His Excellency will be welcomed by Mrs. Sarah Leo, President of Nunatsiavut, and Mr. Wayne Piercy, AngajukKak (Mayor) of Hopedale. He will deliver an address at the Nunatsiavut Assembly. This will be the first time a governor general has spoken to legislative members of the Nunatsiavut Government. His Excellency will then attend a community gathering at Amos Comenius Memorial School where he will address community members and Elders. The Governor General's visit to Hopedale will conclude with a tour of the Hopedale Moravian Mission Complex to learn more about how Moravians from Europe came to Labrador between 1752 and 1771 to establish missions.

Born out of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, the Nunatsiavut Government-an Inuit regional government- was established in 2005. Nunatsiavut is the first of the Inuit regions in Canada to achieve self-governance.

Presentation of the Caring Canadian Award at Ecole elementaire Beachy Cove Elementary School

His Excellency will meet with staff and students from Ecole elementaire Beachy Cove Elementary School. At 1 p.m., he will present the Governor General's Canadian Caring Award to six deserving recipients. Three of these recipients were nominated by grade six students from Ecole elementaire Beachy Cove Elementary School for their contributions to the well-being of their community. The ceremony will take place in the presence of Their Honours the Honourable Frank F. Fagan, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Mrs. Patricia Fagan, as well as family members, school staff and students. The list of recipients and their citations are included below.

His Excellency and Their Honours will help the school staff launch a new smartphone application to enhance family engagement with the school.

Created in 1995, the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award recognizes living Canadians and permanent residents who have made significant, sustained, unpaid contributions to their community, in Canada or abroad. Often working behind the scenes, these individuals volunteer their time and efforts to help their fellow citizens. Launch of the Smart & Caring Fund by the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (CFNL)

As patron of the Community Foundations of Canada, His Excellency will attend the launch of CFNL's Smart & Caring Community Fund where he will deliver remarks. Leading up to 2017, community foundations across Canada are answering the Governor General's call to service to connect the country by establishing Smart & Caring Community Funds across Canada. The funds will give communities the flexibility they need to take advantage of local opportunities, and to help make them the smart and caring places they can become.

CFNL is a unique registered charity. The foundation's goal is to help people from all walks of life support the causes they feel are priorities in their communities and their province. To achieve this goal, CFNL pools and invests the gifts of many donors to create permanent endowment funds for communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. Todd Churchill

Todd Churchill is committed to supporting the organizations that help his son Carter, who has cerebral palsy and is hearing-impaired. He raised funds by renting out the full-size hockey rink in his backyard, featuring side boards, nets and lights, which he built himself. The initiative, dubbed Reason for the Rink, became a huge success, raising both awareness and funding for the Mazol Shriners, Easter Seals of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Rainbow Raiders therapeutic riding program.
