WESTMINSTER, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/17/13 -- Chief Engineer for the Red Bull Stratos capsule, Bill Dodson, relied on engineering analysis and simulation software to deal with the complexities of getting Felix Baumgartner 24 miles above the Earth for his sound-barrier breaking skydive on October 14, 2012. There was nothing standard or off the shelf about the cutting edge Red Bull Stratos project. Bill and a team of engineers at Sage Cheshire Aerospace needed to design and build a capsule that would provide a safe environment against the hostile conditions of vacuum and temperature extremes, and yet be extremely light weight for the helium balloon ascent. Bill will explain to an audience of computer-aided engineering (CAE) practitioners at the NEi Nastran 2013 User Conference how he used NEi Nastran finite element analysis (FEA) software to compute stresses, and virtually test different materials for structural and thermal performance, particularly with the complication of a pressurized structure and features like doors, windows, and pass-throughs for power and oxygen. His analysis work led to successful proof tests. Subsequently, the 3,000 pound capsule fully loaded with recording, communication, instrumentation, and safety gear would travel over two hours to reach a record altitude for manned balloon flight, provide a platform for the space jump, return by parachute, and land intact using crush pads. Bill's background in structural analysis includes previous projects at AeroVironment, Scaled Composites, Ferranti, XCOR, and the Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base.
Conference Presentations and Training Sessions
Additional addresses will include a talk by President and CEO of NEi Software, Dave Weinberg. As the original author and developer of NEi Nastran he will comment on some of the unique technical aspects of the code that provide its signature accuracy, along with the speed and the flexibility to continually accommodate new and innovative simulation technology. Dr. Lee Taylor, author of NEi Explicit will offer his insights on the use of explicit FEA for high speed impact applications. Dr. Taylor is Director of Technology Development for ANATECH Corp. His 30 years of experience in the field of computational mechanics includes co-authoring Explicit for Hibbitt, Karlsson and Sorensen, Inc., authoring Sandia National Labs Pronto 3D explicit, and role as Principal Investigator for Sandia's Advanced Strategic Computing Initiative. To complete the program, simulation results will be presented by customers involved in various industries with applications ranging from aircraft seating and interiors to composite structures, as well as a number of educational training sessions. The NEi Nastran User Conference will be held in conjunction with Siemens PLM Software's Femap Symposium at the Embassy Suites in Covington, KY. The events will run June 25-27. Over the years, a variety of methodologies have emerged in order to overcome the challenges related to project constraints. The successful use of each methodology seems highly context-dependent. However, communication seems to be the common denominator of the many challenges that project management methodologies intend to resolve. In this respect, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can be viewed as powerful tools for managing projects. Few research papers have focused on the way...

As the world moves from DevOps to NoOps, application deployment to the cloud ought to become a lot simpler. However, applications have been architected with a much tighter coupling than it needs to be which makes deployment in different environments and migration between them harder. The microservices architecture, which is the basis of many new age distributed systems such as OpenStack, Netflix and so on is at the heart of CloudFoundry – a complete developer-oriented Platform as a Service (PaaS...

In high-production environments where release cycles are measured in hours or minutes — not days or weeks — there's little room for mistakes and no room for confusion. Everyone has to understand what's happening, in real time, and have the means to do whatever is necessary to keep applications up and running optimally. DevOps is a high-stakes world, but done well, it delivers the agility and performance to significantly impact business competitiveness.

There is no question that the cloud is where businesses want to host data. Until recently hypervisor virtualization was the most widely used method in cloud computing. Recently virtual containers have been gaining in popularity, and for good reason. In the debate between virtual machines and containers, the latter have been seen as the new kid on the block – and like other emerging technology have had some initial shortcomings. However, the container space has evolved drastically since coming on...
