Study Showing Improved Kidney Function in Bariatric Patients Highlights the Benefits of Taking Action, says Dr. Feiz and Associates

Findings presented at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) annual conference suggest that early treatment might prevent chronic kidney disease.

LOS ANGELES, July 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- While many people are aware of the risk of stroke and heart attack related to obesity, far fewer are aware of the connection between severe obesity and kidney disease. This information was presented recently at the 29th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). The data showed distinct improvements in kidney function for nearly all the patients. This means that, apart from the question of lap band surgery vs. gastric sleeve vs. gastric bypass, all bariatric surgeries can save countless kidneys and, therefore, many lives.

As is well known, obesity seriously increases the risk of both type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.  Especially in combination, these two health problems can have severe effects on the kidneys, crucial parts of the body's urinary tract. Over the years, high blood pressure and diabetes can destroy kidney function to the point where the only solution is a transplant or the need for regular dialysis treatment, a difficult and time-consuming procedure with often devastating impacts on the quality and length of life. While it's no surprise that significant weight loss via a gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, or banding can greatly reduce blood pressure and the high blood sugar associated with diabetes, the study indicated that the treatment appeared to have to potential to be highly effective for improving the condition dramatically.

The study's results got even more interesting in that the effects of bariatric surgery also seemed to improve the kidney function of patients with seemingly normal kidney function. It appears that a limited amount of kidney damage was taking place earlier than believed previously but that it can be remedied with effective action. It is becoming more and more apparent that obesity is much more dangerous than having weight loss surgery.
