Big data. Little data. Offsite data. On-premises data. Primary data. Archive data. Data comes in all shapes and sizes. As a culture of pack rats, we all love data of all kinds. We even conducted a whole campaign last year where we told everyone to "Embrace Storage Hogs." And for good reason. The reality is that unless there's a very compelling reason not to, most of us like to save most of our data "just in case."
And based on the results of our latest survey, that may be exactly what you're doing. This summer, while at the Cloud Computing Expo in New York, we conducted a survey of nearly 150 (cloud-disposed) attendees.
So what did we find?
Three out of every five survey respondents feel like they're "always running out of storage." It's no wonder that scalability and the ability to easily manage growing storage needs tops the list of benefits cited by organizations who currently use cloud storage. Yet amongst organizations that do not plan to implement cloud storage, scalability is barely recognized as a benefit at all - coming dead last in the list of benefits. Instead, for this group, offsite data protection for disaster recovery was the obvious benefit that cloud storage can bring.
Since we conducted essentially the same survey two years in a row, this year we were able to draw quite a few comparisons. Not surprisingly, overall implementation percentages rose across all cloud services. And while cloud storage was the the second least implemented cloud service today, more people (84%) planned to implement cloud storage than any other cloud service. Meanwhile, the number of mature cloud users who have been using cloud computing for more than 3 years is up to 37% - an increase by more than a third from the 2012 numbers.
