Human trafficking, cyber security, the decline in court funding and gender equity issues in the legal profession are the focus of just some of the legal programs at the American Bar Association Annual Meeting August 8-13 in San Francisco where Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT), Vice President and General Counsel for the Americas Cheree McAlpine will be presenting on “The Real Deal.” The panel, “GC’S Give the Real Deal: A Candid Discussion about Best Practices, Value and Silicon Valley,” will be held on August 9th.
Along with several other legal professionals, McAlpine will participate in a panel discussion on privacy law, high-tech law issues, emerging trends relative to in-house and outside counsel relations, and will provide an overview of best practices. Likewise, the panel will discuss what law departments and outside counsel are actually doing to demonstrate and provide more value. Finally, the panel will provide anecdotes to empower both in-house and outside counsel to implement tools to enhance their practice and success.
“Sharing best practices is probably one of the most important activities for any professional, especially those of us in law,” said McAlpine. “Law is a dynamic field and issues emerge sometimes almost overnight requiring all of us to be at the top of our game in order to provide more value to the clients we represent. During the conference we will be discussing the everyday challenges we all face and share our key lessons learned.”
As a 19-year veteran of the Silicon Valley legal community, McAlpine brings significant industry knowledge in corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, and intellectual property transactions to her position at Avnet. She most recently served as vice president and general counsel of Wyse Technology, Inc., a cloud client computing company, where she was responsible for worldwide legal affairs. In May 2012, she led the legal aspects of the sale of the company to Dell Computers. While at Wyse, McAlpine also helped to increase the company’s patent portfolio by more than 300 percent, which had a direct impact on the company’s valuation.
The National Diversity Council recently selected McAlpine to receive its 2013 Most Powerful and Influential Women in California Award. McAlpine was recognized at the 2013 California Diversity and Leadership Conference on April 18, 2013. This accolade honors high-ranking female executives from a variety of industries who have demonstrated leadership excellence, a record of accomplishments, impact on the direction of their organizations, visibility in the community and commitment to the highest ethical standards.
