VuCOMP, Inc. announced today that it has installed its advanced computer-aided detection system, M-Vu CAD, across eight U.S. Imaging diagnostic imaging centers in Texas. M-Vu CAD is designed to provide an unprecedented level of performance to help radiologists find breast cancer earlier. The VuCOMP CAD system is regarded by U.S. Imaging as a pivotal, seamless technology that will help drive efficiencies together with their Konica Minolta digital mammography and PACS systems.
VuCOMP’s M-Vu system analyzes mammographic images and marks suspicious areas using sophisticated mathematical algorithms.
“We conducted a great deal of research before settling on VuCOMP CAD for our digital mammography system. We felt that VuCOMP’s technology was superior as it provided greater sensitivity and specificity,” said U.S. Imaging founder L.E. Richey, M.D. “Another factor in our decision was their FDA reader study which showed that the radiologists were more effective when using VuCOMP CAD.”
U.S. Imaging CEO Todd Richey added, “With continuous pressure on reimbursement and rising overhead, it is important to increase volume without sacrificing quality. The right CAD system can effectively serve as a second set of eyes helping us to move through mammography reads more efficiently. Instead of short-circuiting the process like our previous system did with too many false positives, system throughput problems, and displays which were often hard to interpret, VuCOMP’s CAD has instead enhanced throughput. This is because our readers have significantly higher diagnostic confidence and the CAD works seamlessly with our other technologies.”
The VuCOMP CAD system received FDA approval to work with film mammography in January 2012, and supplemental approval for digital mammography in October 2012. While CAD systems have been used in clinical practice since the mid-1990s, recent FDA guidelines have significantly raised the bar for CAD performance requirements, and now recommend comprehensive reader studies proving that radiologists are more effective when they use CAD. The VuCOMP system is the only FDA-approved mammography CAD product in the world that meets these recommendations.
Jeff Wehnes, President and CEO of VuCOMP, said, “We are very pleased that U.S. Imaging is finding our breast cancer detection technology to be a significant improvement over their previous CAD system.”
