GLEN ALLEN, Va., Aug. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- State Budget Solutions, a national nonprofit based in Virginia and dedicated to fiscal responsibility, released a report calling for rejection of Medicaid expansion in Virginia. The Commonwealth is one of the last states to decide if it will participate in Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act. A 12-member commission from the Virginia General Assembly began meeting on Monday, August 19, to determine the fate of Medicaid expansion in the state.
The report, Medicaid Expansion: The Wrong Prescription for Virginia, details how other states that have expanded Medicaid coverage did not obtain the predicted benefits.
"Proponents of expanded government insurance always promise lower costs for the taxpayers, better health outcomes, and lower rates of uninsured individuals. Every time, Medicaid fails to deliver," said Bob Williams, President of SBS.
"This ought to be quick work for the Virginia Medicaid Commission to recognize that there are far better alternatives to Medicaid expansion and reject expansion."
Medicaid spending takes up nearly 21 percent of Virginia's general fund spending, and costs have been increasing at an average of over nine percent each year. Those who support expansion say that by accepting more federal funding, the program can be utilized by more Virginians and lower the state's financial burden, but several studies and real-world examples refute this claim.
"Our report shows that once a state enters Medicaid expansion, it cannot leave without risking serious fiscal calamity," said Williams. "To rely on the federal government for fiscal stability is a fool's errand. Medicaid should be fixed before it is expanded to ensure citizens see the best outcomes possible."
