Sanfilippo Syndrome is an inherited genetic disease of metabolism. It's fatal and there is no treatment. The disease occurs in 1 in 1.4mn births, and because of its rarity, it's left to medical research foundations like JJB to fund the science. JJB is currently funding four promising research programs. Proceeds from the benefit keep these programs going.
About Jonah's Just Begun
JJB is a 501(C)3 committed to driving the science for Sanfilippo Syndrome type C. Formed in 2010 in honor of Jill Wood and Jeremy Weishaar's son Jonah, who suffers from the disease. Jonah resides in NY, his Mother Jill is a native Oregonian. Jeremy is a camera operator on the new hit television show 'Elementary.'
"Jonah is 5 and in the prime of his life right now says Jeremy, but the clock is ticking. On average cognitive decline is seen at 6 years of age, most kids do not survive into the second decade of life. We're in a race against time.
"After mine and Jonah's appearance on Good Morning America, we were contacted by a family from Stayton OR, whose daughter suffers from Sanfilippo type C. With just 18 known cases in the US this was quite a coincidence," says Jill Wood.
Not only has Jonah appeared on GMA, recently Jonah and family gave an interview to Dr. Sanjay Gupta on CNN alongside actor Jonny Lee Miller, who plays Sherlock on Elementary.
"Jonny has become a big fan of Jonah since I told him about my son on set. This past May Jonny ran an ultra-marathon (50 miles) raising over $140,000 dollars! http://www.crowdrise.com/jonnyleemiller50miler Funding is desperately needed for research and Jonny being a father of a son the same age as Jonah understood our urgency and desperation." Says Jeremy.
