NC Law Firm Offers Help to Harnett County Homeowners Displaced by Ray Road Widening

The NC Eminent Domain Law Firm to host a seminar for Harnett County Residents to let them know how they may be able to receive a second check for their property

DURHAM, N.C., Sept. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The plans for widening Ray Road (SR 1121) include taking land from over 100 property owners – and in some cases, the proposed road will go right through owners' homes or businesses.

In response, the NC Eminent Domain Law Firm is hosting a complimentary seminar to educate property owners about their legal rights. The seminar is scheduled for 7:00pm at the Holiday Inn Express in Spring Lake on Tuesday, September 17th.

The Department of Transportation's plans include widening Ray Road to a four-lane divided highway from NC 210 to Overhills Road (SR 1120), as well as realigning a couple of intersections, installing roundabouts, adding bike lanes and purchasing an additional ten feet on each side of the road for future sidewalks.

"In situations like this, property owners are often unclear about what options are available to them and many end up making decisions that hurt them financially in the long run," said NC Eminent Domain attorney Jason Campbell. "We've studied this project and may be able to point out things they should be aware of."

Campbell and his colleague Stan Abrams will lead the seminar. Both used to work as attorneys for the Department of Transportation, before deciding to go into private practice to help the property owners individually.

"In our experience, the DOT is like any other buyer – they want to pay as little as they reasonably can for the property they need. By taking the right steps, homeowners can receive a first check for the DOT's initial offer and then negotiate for more. That's something we'll cover in our meeting," said Abrams.

Abrams and Campbell will bring copies of the DOT's plans to the seminar and will make themselves available to discuss with any interested property owner how their specific property is being impacted by the project.
