SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Boston Red Sox have established fast wireless LAN connectivity at its facilities, including the legendary Fenway Park, with the help of Extreme Networks, Inc. and expert integrator Carousel Industries. Extreme Networks wireless offering has resulted in a more efficient method for capturing and communicating information throughout the entire facility with a high performance, standards-based system.
The Red Sox have implemented wireless LAN connectivity to improve the reliability of its ticket scanning system, to provide in-seat Internet service in select areas and deliver consistent and high-speed access to players, the media, maintenance crews and service staff. For example, food servers are now be able to take orders via wireless PDAs, storing and relaying valuable information on the fly.
Extreme Networks' wireless LAN (WLAN) technology enables critical security features and reliable coverage, and complements the Red Sox previously- established converged IP network. The Boston Red Sox telecommunications staff and Carousel's dedicated implementation team tested, then selected Extreme Networks' Summit(R) WM 1000 wireless LAN switch and the Altitude 350-2 Access Points (APs) for their reliability, performance and ease-of-use.
Additionally, Extreme Networks is a member of Avaya's DeveloperConnection program and the Summit WM switch is an Avaya-certified solution, complementing the park's existing IP telephony and network foundation.
With the Summit WM, the Boston Red Sox now have a responsive, Layer 3 voice-grade roaming network with mobile Quality of Service (QoS), making the new wireless network more stable, reliable and simple to manage and maintain. The Summit WM wireless controller also provides a controller-less remote site capability, allowing the Red Sox to cost-effectively extend wireless LAN connectivity to its facilities in the Dominican Republic by simply connecting Altitude APs to the remote network.
"Adding wireless connectivity has been a homerun this season as it adds new levels of convenience, access and security to our network," said Steve Conley, Chief Information Officer for the Boston Red Sox. "The media and our players are pleased with ease and reliability resulting from Extreme Networks' Summit WM solution, serving as a beneficial extension of our converged network platform."
"We're very pleased with the results of this upgrade," said Bob Harkins, vice president of sales for Carousel Industries. "Extreme Networks' best-of- breed products were integrated seamlessly with the Avaya infrastructure installed at Fenway Park. The result is a powerful system providing the Red Sox organization with improved services and capabilities, ones that greatly enhance the network."
"The expanded use of wireless Ethernet for simple, reliable connectivity is now showcased prominently for the Red Sox at Fenway Park with the help of our partner, Carousel Industries," said Dan Sibille, senior director of North American Channels for Extreme Networks. "Working with the Boston Red Sox to meet their converged networking needs has been a true success and demonstrates our ability to make complex technology both simple and effective."
