NEW YORK, Sept. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Attencia, known for its emphasis on providing individualized private home care, is excited to partake in National Falls Prevention Awareness Day this September 22nd. Spearheaded by the National Council on Aging (NCOA), the day is built around the theme of Preventing Falls -- One Step at a Time and is designed to promote awareness of the ways older adults and the friends, family members, and professionals in their lives can help prevent falls.
"In addition to providing care and support after an illness or injury, our staff is extremely dedicated to doing everything in their power to inform people about fall prevention. Falls can be particularly dangerous for older individuals, making the National Falls Prevention Awareness Day especially relevant to many of our clients. We're excited to partake in the NCOA's event and we hope that it will us provide an even higher level of care," said Joseph Kleinman, Director of Special Projects, Americare CSS / Attencia.
According to the NCOA, a senior is seen in an emergency room for a fall-related injury every 15 seconds; the organization hopes that the September 22nd event will help lower this rate. To this end, the NCOA has released a new infographic listing some important steps for preventing falls. The organization recommends utilizing an exercise and balance program on a consistent basis and encourages seniors to get their hearing and vision tested annually. Health care providers can help determine the risk of a fall and physicians or pharmacists can assist seniors by discussing which medications and side effects can increase the risk of falling.
The NCOA also stresses that preventing falls is not the sole responsibility of seniors. Involved family, friends, and home care nurses, such as those provided by Attencia, are an integral part of any support system. They can assist with any of the recommendations listed above and update a senior's residence to ensure there is adequate lighting, grab bars in key spots, and no tripping hazards.
