HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale and Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder announced endorsements of statewide judicial candidates for election and retention in the November General Election. The state labor federation is the largest labor organization in the state, representing over 800,000 union workers.
The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO endorses Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice Ron Castille and Supreme Court Justice Max Baer for retention in the November election.
The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO also endorses Judge John T. "Jack" McVay for election to the Superior Court of Pennsylvania, Superior Court Judge Susan Peikes Gantman and Superior Court Judge Jack Panella for retention on Election Day Tuesday, November 5, 2013.
"In our opinion these candidates have demonstrated an uncommon commitment to justice and fairness for working people under the laws of Pennsylvania," President Bloomingdale said. "We will work on their behalf in educating and mobilizing our members on their exceptional record of protecting and upholding the rights of all citizens," Bloomingdale said.
"The justices and judges make the final decisions on many issues that determine the quality of life of working families. They ultimately decide our children's opportunity to a quality education, our families' access to health care, our rights to workers' and unemployment compensation, and our voting rights. We will encourage our members and all workers to stay informed and to elect our endorsed candidates," Snyder said.
Pennsylvania AFL-CIO endorsements require 2/3rds approval of the members of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Executive Council. The members of the Council gave their unanimous endorsement to these candidates. The Council reviews the qualifications and the records of every candidate prior their decisions on endorsements.
The Executive Council is comprised of union leaders representing unions affiliated with the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO and the two Executive Officers: Rick Bloomingdale, President and Frank Snyder, Secretary-Treasurer, who also is the State Political Director.
