LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwired - October 16, 2013) - LaunchKey, a company that provides secure and anonymous multi-factor authentication-as-a-service using a smartphone or tablet, has announced a partnership with Local Motors, the world's leading open-source hardware company best known for designing, manufacturing and selling crowd-sourced production vehicles in local markets. LaunchKey's authentication technology will power Local Motors' Keyless Control Project, the first co-creation initiative at its new Las Vegas microfactory location.
Most automobiles are unlocked and started with a single key -- a simple possession factor for authentication. LaunchKey's new multi-factor authentication technology will provide secure and convenient keyless access and control through a user's smartphone.
"Local Motors is at the forefront of vehicle innovation," said LaunchKey CEO and Co-Founder Geoff Sanders. "The team is leading a third industrial revolution by developing next generation mechanical designs that change the driver experience."
The automotive industry is just one market that is rapidly moving into The Internet of Things, a world where everyday objects are connected to the Internet and communicate with other devices.
Integrating LaunchKey's authentication and remote management technology within Local Motors' Keyless Control Project is the first phase of a partnership between the two companies. The companies are also working on authentication solutions to provide remote, programmable and secure car systems to further enhance driver experience, safety and security.
LaunchKey's core technology platform offers private and anonymous multi-factor authentication in the cloud. LaunchKey is currently developing a proximity-based authentication capability that enables local communication to nearby devices without Internet or data connection. This product feature set will be a key differentiator for the company as it provides secure authentication to devices and systems not connected to the Internet.
"LaunchKey's innovative solutions are an ideal match for the inspired design and rapid development provided by our global community," said Local Motors Chief Strategy Officer Justin Fishkin. "They will be a valuable partner as we continue to bring the world's most innovative vehicular products to market."
LaunchKey is also collaborating with Project 100, a Las Vegas-based complete transportation system designed to let members get rid of their car and be more connected to their neighborhood. The two innovative tech companies are collaborating to push the envelope of vehicle security by utilizing LaunchKey's secure authentication within future Project 100 initiatives. In 2014, Project 100 will enter into an invite-only beta program.
LaunchKey is evolving user authentication and eliminating passwords with anonymous multi-factor authentication-as-a-service through smartphones and tablets. LaunchKey's free app enables users on websites, applications and other networked systems to securely and privately authenticate without passwords. For developers, LaunchKey provides a trustworthy alternative to password-based user authentication while reducing the liability passwords create. The founders were recently named to Inc. Magazine's prestigious "30 Under 30" list of entrepreneurs for 2013. For more information, visit www.launchkey.com.
