Nova Technologies Chooses Havok’s Simulation Development Framework as Core Technology for PEO STRI’s Call for Fire Trainer (CFFT) Program

Havok™, a leading provider of real-time simulation development and 3D visualization technology announces today that its simulation framework is serving as the core image generation technology for the U.S. Army’s Call for Fire Trainer (CFFT) III program being developed by Nova Technologies, a premier provider of high quality simulation training programs. The development process has integrated the Havok capability with the Joint Fires Product Line (JFPL) framework, a simulation architecture managed by the Program Manager for Special Operations Forces Training Systems (PM STS). JFPL is formed around standards such as the Common Image Generator Interface (CIGI), High Level Architecture (HLA) and Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS).

The advanced observer training of the CFFT III program requires the use of high fidelity image generation technology to create virtual battlefields in which Forward Observer personnel can train in call-for-fire missions. Nova Technologies is currently utilizing Havok’s simulation framework as key technology for the program to deliver high fidelity, physics-enabled image generation capabilities including destructive reactions and kinematic responses.

“Havok’s extended feature set provides a broad spectrum of unique capabilities that will enable us to address specific requirements, such as the reuse of existing content from government sources for the program in order to provide highly immersive simulation training,” said Buddy Black, President of Nova Technologies. “Since the kickoff of the program, Havok’s support team has been great at helping us ensure we get the most out of the technology to deliver highly immersive training capabilities on time and on budget.”

“It has been an extremely rewarding experience working with Nova Technologies and their highly capable engineering team during their development of the CFFT program. We are proud of what was accomplished in such a short time with a combination of Havok’s extensive experience in physics and high fidelity 3D visuals and Nova’s technology architecture and extensive hardware integration experience,” said Cory Kumm, Director of Military & Simulation at Havok. “With the hard work and cooperation of both Havok and Nova’s engineering teams, Nova is able to create the CFFT III training program using cutting edge technology for incredible interactive realism all on time and on budget even with the current industry challenges.”

CFFT III will support basic through advanced-level training, including forward observer (FO) tasks and procedures and mission planning. It also trains FO personnel with management of Artillery, Mortars, Close Air Support (CAS), and Naval Gunfire. The CFFT III training solution integrates Semi-Automated Forces (SAF) systems along with the use of Simulated Military Equipment (SME). Initial deliveries of CFFT III are scheduled for 1QCY14.

Havok and Nova Technologies will be part in the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) 2013 in Orlando, Florida from December 2nd through December 5th. Capabilities and results of the development process for the image generation system for CFFT III are being showcased at Havok’s booth #859 and are being demonstrated in a CFFT III system configuration in Nova Technologies’ booth, #629. The demonstrations in booth #859 utilize Immersive Display’s panoramic, multi-display dome that was calibrated using Scalable Display’s projector blending software. The CFFT III Mobile Team Trainer baseline is being demonstrated in booth #629, which utilizes a portable configuration of the same technology being presented in Havok’s booth #859.

How do APIs and IoT relate? The answer is not as simple as merely adding an API on top of a dumb device, but rather about understanding the architectural patterns for implementing an IoT fabric. There are typically two or three trends: Exposing the device to a management framework Exposing that management framework to a business centric logic Exposing that business layer and data to end users. This last trend is the IoT stack, which involves a new shift in the separation of what stuff happe...

What do a firewall and a fortress have in common? They are no longer strong enough to protect the valuables housed inside. Like the walls of an old fortress, the cracks in the firewall are allowing the bad guys to slip in - unannounced and unnoticed. By the time these thieves get in, the damage is already done and the network is already compromised. Intellectual property is easily slipped out the back door leaving no trace of forced entry. If we want to reign in on these cybercriminals, it's hig...
