Healthcare Informatics Innovation Prize Accepting Submissions

AMIA Provider Innovation in Informatics (Pi2) Award, sponsored by SSi-SEARCH, to promote and recognize innovation in healthcare informatics

BETHESDA, Md., Dec. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Two leading healthcare organizations have teamed up to honor pioneers in the application of clinical informatics solutions. To recognize the contributions of the physicians and nurses on the frontline of innovation, the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) has partnered with SSi-SEARCH to establish the AMIA Provider Innovation in Informatics (Pi2) Award.

The Pi2 award will be presented to teams of healthcare professionals who have applied innovative informatics solutions to improve healthcare delivery. The innovations may be new solutions developed within a health system that have the potential for broader dissemination, or novel and highly effective applications of existing technologies.

"Health systems can be labs for innovation – creating and applying the informatics solutions that will transform healthcare," said AMIA Vice President of Corporate Relations and Business Development Ross D. Martin, MD, MHA. "This award will recognize healthcare professionals who are leading the charge toward improved patient care through cutting-edge technology."

Submissions for the award will be accepted through Dec. 31. The award will be given during the iHealth conference, held from Jan. 30-Feb. 1 in Orlando, Fla. All finalist team leaders will receive an invitation to participate in a pre-conference workshop and free registration to the meeting. Few accomplishments are the product of one individual, so, to recognize that team effort, the winning team will also receive a monthly delivery of their favorite pie for a year, a not-so-subtle play on the name of the award and an appreciation of true team spirit.

"With this award, we're not only looking forward to disseminating smart, novel informatics solutions to the healthcare community," Martin said. "We're also looking forward to disseminating free, delicious pie to some deserving leaders in healthcare."

Teams of physicians, nurses and administrators are beginning to use clinical informatics technologies and analytics methods such as electronic health records (EHRs), natural language processing and data analysis algorithms to improve healthcare delivery within their systems. Continued innovation and application of clinical informatics solutions has the potential to help achieve the healthcare goals, including improved population health, individual healthcare experiences and cost effectiveness, commonly referred to as the triple aim.

"It's clear that informatics is the strategic lever to transform healthcare," said Pamela Dixon, Managing Partner of SSi-SEARCH. "This award aims to highlight innovative thinking, spread best practices in clinical informatics and encourage wider use of the field's best thinking.  We see so many great leaders at the forefront of technology, building solid teams, and using bold thinking to make a real impact.  Rewarding those leaders and teams is at the heart of this award."
