Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

FiveRuns Announces Support For Oracle Database
Web 2.0, SaaS Solution Monitors Both Open Source And Traditional Systems And Applications

By: Oracle News Desk
Oct. 23, 2006 12:15 PM

FiveRuns announced the addition of Oracle Database support to its flagship Systems Management offering, a sleek, hosted Web application that presents relevant, actionable data in an appealing and logical user interface. Using FiveRuns intelligent, straightforward solution for monitoring, analyzing and reporting, users are able to quickly identify problems in their environment and take proactive steps to improve overall system performance.

Now, FiveRuns also offers full support for Oracle Database 10g, including Performance and Availability Monitoring as well as Event Management for such critical areas as:
* Database server performance
* Free space utilization
* SQL statement performance
* Caching subsystem effectiveness
* Sorting performance and analysis
* Transaction and locking diagnosis

FiveRuns provides a comprehensive solution for IT departments running Oracle Database, featuring the most up-to-date troubleshooting information available from FiveRuns.net, a source of relevant suggestions from the Web and blogsphere.

"Systems Management 2.0 companies like FiveRuns are bringing the idea and functionality of enterprise IT management to smaller and medium businesses," said Michael Cote, RedMonk. "Their emphasis on ease of use, more fluid work- flows, and a light-weight approach to maintaining IT health could prove beneficial for companies who previously thought they couldn't afford the time and money to do systems management."

Seventy percent of Oracle's customers are small and medium businesses with fewer than 1,000 employees, a market that FiveRuns caters to specifically. With typically under-staffed and overstretched IT departments, SMB IT managers lack the resources to sort through thousands of metrics and navigate complicated user interfaces. To avoid this, FiveRuns started from scratch, collaborating with cutting-edge usability experts to create a drastically improved and efficient workflow.

"Companies of all sizes are facing an uphill battle in terms of their IT needs," said FiveRuns CEO Steven Smith. "They are increasingly going to the open source stack to meet specific IT needs and save money, but at the same time they have a legacy investment in non-open source software such as industry-standard Oracle servers for mission-critical database applications. A versatile offering like FiveRuns allows them to manage both of these environments with a single integrated solution."

FiveRuns currently supports both traditional and open source systems, such as Linux, Microsoft Windows, Sun Solaris, Mac OS X, JBoss, Apache, Tomcat, and MySQL as well as Oracle Database 10g and soon to be released support for Oracle 9i Database.
