Michael Premo Named to Run Why Marriage Matters Ohio Campaign

Veteran political strategist led successful marriage equality efforts in New Jersey

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Dec. 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Why Marriage Matters Ohio announced Wednesday that political strategist Michael Premo is leading the statewide public education campaign for marriage equality in Ohio.

Premo, a nationally known veteran of political campaigns in New Jersey, Michigan, Texas and New York, will manage the statewide Why Marriage Matters Ohio public education campaign. Premo most recently led efforts on behalf of New Jersey United for Marriage. In October, New Jersey became the 14th state to win marriage for same-sex couples. Sixteen states and the District of Columbia now enjoy marriage equality.

The 2004 ballot amendment to the Ohio Constitution limited marriage to one man and one woman only and prohibited any legal status for same-sex couples.

"Every state presents unique challenges and opportunities to realizing marriage equality, and Ohio is no exception," Premo said. "With a strong coalition of local, state and national LGBT organizations and our allies, we are building a smart and transparent campaign that will win marriage equality in Ohio."

Why Marriage Matters Ohio was launched in September by the Equality Ohio Education Fund, the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Ohio, and national organizations Freedom to Marry and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

"Mike Premo has demonstrated an outstanding ability to win hearts and minds in every campaign in  which he has been involved," said Elyzabeth Holford, board chair of Why Marriage Matters Ohio and executive director of Equality Ohio. "As a proven champion of marriage equality, Mike's leadership of the Why Marriage Matters Ohio team brings a new level of expertise in moving Ohio toward full equality."

Also on Wednesday, the Why Marriage Matters Ohio public education campaign announced that Columbus-based Paul Werth Associates is spearheading strategic communications for Equality Ohio, Why Marriage Matters Ohio and other statewide efforts.

Founded in 1963, Werth has long been recognized for leadership in public relations and public affairs – raising awareness, building credibility and mobilizing public opinion for clients in the private and public sectors. Senior Vice President Kimber Perfect is leading the Werth team, which includes campaign veteran and political strategist Amanda Wurst.
