Christmas Feast & Angel Gifts at Our Place

Over 1,000 meals to be served to city's most vulnerable on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 11 a.m-2 p.m.

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 12/16/13 -- Local politicians, community leaders and volunteers will help serve over 1,000 Christmas meals to Greater Victoria's homeless and most vulnerable at Our Place's annual holiday meal on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

The festive lunch will consist of 450 kg of turkey, 225 kg of potatoes, 110 kg of stuffing, 100 kg of vegetables, 115 litres of gravy, 25 kg of cranberry sauce, 125 pies and over 1,500 cups of coffee. And as an extra treat, Scott Burley and his team from 2 Burly Men moving company will be handing out chocolates to everyone.

"Christmas is an important time for family, but many of the people we serve have little or no connection to their biological family," said Don Evans, executive director of Our Place. "We're the closest family they have. We want them to know they are important and loved."

Angel Gifts: Our Chapel will be filled with more than 950 personalized, wrapped gifts for family members who pre-registered with the Angel Gifts program. Provided through the generosity of the local community, these gifts will be on display on the 17th and distributed on the 18th and 19th.

Great Photo/Video Opportunity: On Tuesday, Dec. 17, local politicians and community leaders will help dish up a delicious meal from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. that is expected to serve around 1,000 of Victoria's less fortunate citizens.

Also, the Vancouver Island Brain Injury Society Choir will be singing for the first time for an audience outside of their meeting place in the main floor Drop-In from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Our Place is an inner-city community centre serving Greater Victoria's most vulnerable: working poor, impoverished elderly, individuals with mental health and physical challenges, and the homeless. It provides 45 transitional housing units, over 1,200 meals per day, hot showers, free clothing, counseling and outreach services. Most importantly, it provides a sense of hope and belonging to our neighbours in need.
