CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 12/17/13 -- The Barley Council of Canada (BCC) is pleased to announce that Malting Industry Association of Canada (MIAC) President Phil de Kemp has joined the leadership team as trade and policy advisor.
"Phil de Kemp's long-standing commitment to promoting Canadian barley and increasing market access will allow our Council to make recommendations that benefit the entire barley value chain," said BCC Chair Brian Otto.
As the national voice for barley, the BCC is relied upon to advise the Federal government on trade and policy initiatives relevant to the agricultural industry. Otto believes De Kemp's strong background in these areas will help to ensure the long-term profitability of barley for our members.
"Policy and trade are the backbone of Canadian agriculture and the federal government now looks to BCC for advice," added Otto.
De Kemp provides 17 years of experience in strengthening Canada's domestic and international trade relationships. He began his career working for Cargill Ltd and in 1986 he was seconded to the Federal government on a two-year executive interchange program. De Kemp later became the Senior Policy Advisor to the Federal Minister of State for Grains, Oilseeds and the Canadian Wheat Board.
"My services will allow BCC to give the quality direction needed on trade and policy issues," said de Kemp. "I'm eager to be a part of this innovative team and look forward to providing strong policy guidance that benefits all end uses of barley."
De Kemp joins the BCC at an exciting time for the industry as Canada's export barley market continues to grow and thrive through initiatives like the Canadian European Trade Agreement (CETA). CETA is expected to remove tariffs on virtually all of Canada's agriculture and food products over time, giving export markets a significant boost.
De Kemp will remain in Ottawa as President and CEO of MIAC, in addition to advocating BCC initiatives to the Federal government.
