Travelocity.ca unveils Canadians' travel resolutions by generation

New Year's survey data reveals hottest 2014 travel resolutions of millennials and baby boomers

TORONTO, Dec. 20, 2013 /CNW/ - Travelocity.ca today released the results of a national survey revealing the travel resolutions of millennials and baby boomers. Despite the stereotype that these groups have little in common, surprisingly, the data reveals they look for the same things in travel. While household income, age and time restraints may differ, 28 percent of millennials and 27 per cent of boomers named their top travel resolution in 2014 as exploring history, art and culture. In second place, 23 per cent of millennials and 24 per cent of boomers want to experience a luxe all-inclusive beach vacation in 2014.

"The survey data reveals that millennials have a greater appreciation for and exposure to travel than their parents did at the same age," says Travelocity.ca resident travel expert, Brian Simpson. "They have been raised on planes and travel is second nature already. As a result, their travel resolutions seem to mirror those of older baby boomers."

While millennials are often looked at as a generation of 'backpackers' the new data reveals the two generations share expensive taste, with 44 per cent of millennials and 47 per cent of baby boomers rating luxury travel as very important when travelling in the new year. Interestingly, men and women in both generations ranked luxury travel at equal importance.

"The data revealed that millennials have experienced comfortable travel with their parents and now seem unwilling to compromise on their own adventures in 2014," said Simpson.

Overall, Canadians of all generations rank travel as highly important with 88 per cent of millennials and 89 per cent of baby boomers saying they plan to travel just as much, if not more, in 2014 as they did in 2013.

Other notable revelations include:

  • Millennials, a generation perceived as 'backpackers', actually ranked backpacking or unstructured spontaneous trips as their third most desired travel resolution destination of 2014 at 18 per cent, while baby boomers have no interest in the activity - ranking it last with only 9 per cent looking to do it in the new year
  • Both millennials and baby boomers are looking forward to reaping the benefits of travel in the new year - vowing to have a better balance of work and play, take more vacation days and reduce stress
  • It seems that baby boomers are a little jaded when it comes to New Year's resolutions in general.  While 23 per cent of millennials responded that they don't plan on making any New Year's resolutions in 2014, but that number jumped to 30 per cent for boomers.
