Ring the New Year in Safely: If You Plan on Drinking, Don't Drive

OAKVILLE, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 12/30/13 -- Whether you're ringing in 2014 at a bar or celebrating at home with friends, make a resolution to prevent impaired driving this New Year's, urges MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada

"Our message is a simple one," said MADD Canada National President Angeliki Souranis. "If you plan on drinking, don't plan on driving. Driving impaired is never worth the risk, to yourself or to others."

If you're heading out to a bar or party, take a few minutes and plan your trip home before your night begins. If you're going to be drinking, have a sober ride home. Take a cab or public transit, arrange for a designated driver, or plan to stay over.

If you're hosting a party, take steps to ensure your guests don't drive impaired. Make sure food and non-alcoholic beverages are available and know who's going to be driving. Hosts should also have numbers available for taxi companies and be prepared to have intoxicated guests spend the night. For more information and tips on safeguarding your guests, see MADD Canada's pamphlets on social hosts and legal liability at http://www.madd.ca/english/research/liability.html.

Party hosts looking to add non-alcoholic beverage options to their menu should check out MADD Virgin Drinks at canstore.maddvirgindrinks.com, including champagne, wine and mojitos.

"We all share the responsibility of making safe choices when getting behind the wheel," said Allstate Canada President and Chief Executive Officer John O'Donnell. "With so many alternate transportation options available, there is never an excuse for driving impaired."

MADD Canada is also reminding Canadians that they can play an important role in taking impaired drivers off the roads. If you see a driver you suspect is impaired, call 911 and report them to the police. Every call could prevent a crash and save a life.
