NAPERVILLE, Ill., Dec. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Compact cars are no longer relegated to "also-ran" status in the automotive industry. The days of people settling for taking home a compact car are now long gone in favor of higher-performance vehicles that are exciting to drive and pleasing to look at sitting in a customer's driveway. Many of these affordable vehicles make a lot of lofty claims about being able to accomplish certain performance standards. Claims are simply that. That's why Scion of Naperville has taken the time to compare the 2014 Scion FR-S vs. the 2014 Honda Civic Si. In terms of building compact cars, Scion is a relative new-comer compared to Honda, but the small company has made huge strides in recent years.
Being a young company that is heavily invested in using all available technology, the 2014 Scion FR-S features a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine with the cylinder arranged in a "boxer" format. This accomplishes to goals of the modern compact car; boxer engines naturally increase power and fuel-economy. This is clearly represented in the 200 horsepower that the new FR-S is capable of making and the Environmental Protection Agency fuel-economy estimated 25 miles per gallon in the city and 34 miles per gallon on the highway that the new Scion sports car records.
On the other side of the equation, the newly redesigned 2014 Honda Civic Si has a significantly larger 2.4-liter, inline four-cylinder engine that has a mere five-horsepower advantage over the 2014 Scion FR-S; but also has seen a fairly significant drop in head-to-head fuel-economy to the tune of two or three miles per gallon across the board. While the new Civic Si can be had in two or four doors, the new Scion FR-S maintains its sportier credentials with an available convertible option.
The interiors of the two cars vary greatly as well. Honda designers have chosen to stay with the tried and true tired dashboard design, as well as a fairly traditional cabin design throughout the vehicle for the new Civic Si. Scion, like usual, has chosen to go a different direction. Many of the elements of the interior inside the new Scion FR-S have very racing-related feel. Such racing elements include the large speedometer and tachometer as well as the way the center stack is canted toward the driver. Additionally, there is increased support from the side-bolstered seats.
