The event got underway at 6:03 p.m. sharp at Duffy Square in NYC, after the sparkling ball ascended the flag pole for its midnight descent with an introduction by Li Li, executive vice-president of the Sino-American Friendship Association and welcome remarks by Ambassador Sun Guoxiand, Consulate General Of The Peoples Republic Of China In New York.

A fusion of eastern meets western culture was captured in an opening hat dance presented by a group of Brooklyn dancers while a direct descendent of Confucius, Mr. Kong Lingtao, shared some wisdom with the American audience while a group of young talented youth showcased the "Yi" of Shandong culture with a Kung Fu performance.

Other delegates in attendance included U.S. Congresswoman, Grace Meng; Peter Zhang, President of the Sino-American Friendship Association; Tim Tompkins,  President Of The Times Square Alliance; Cristin Burtis: Executive Director Of The Mayors Office Of Citywide Event Coordination And Management and Rongguo Wang, a representative Of Shandong Province.

With Chinese immigrants now placed as the second largest foreign born group in New York City, it was little wonder that SAFA presented Confucianism and Shandong Culture for the first time in the annual Times Square New Year's Eve celebration.
