Los Angeles 2020 Commission Releases Report Detailing the Current State of Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 01/08/14 -- The Los Angeles 2020 Commission released today a report titled "A Time For Truth," that details the current situation and issues facing the city of Los Angeles. Established by Chair Mickey Kantor at the request of Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson, the Los Angeles 2020 Commission was convened to study and report on the fiscal stability and job growth in Los Angeles. This report is the first of two the Commission will produce; the second will contain recommendations for addressing the challenges facing the city.

Cited in the report as the pressing issues currently plaguing the city are poverty, weak job creation, lack of industry, poor economic development, traffic, declining school system, budgetary cuts and deficits, and more. "Los Angeles is barely treading water while the rest of the world is moving forward. We risk falling behind in adapting to the realities of the 21st century and becoming a city in decline," reads the report. "Los Angeles is sinking into a future in which it no longer can provide the public services to which our people's taxes entitle them and where the promises made to public employees about a decent and secure retirement simply cannot be kept."

The independent commission, chaired by former U.S. Commerce Secretary Mickey Kantor, is comprised of 13 men and women who have served in leadership roles at all levels of government, business, labor and civic organizations including co-chair Austin Beutner, Hon. Maria Contreras-Sweet, Hon. Gray Davis, Hon. Hilda L. Solis, Brian D'Arcy, Kathay Feng, David W. Fleming, Antonia Hernandez, Tyler Izen, Ron Miller, George Pla and Thomas S. Sayles.
