ROCHESTER, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 01/16/14 -- Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has been selected as the Hickok Belt Award winner for the month of December 2013. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA). Manning was selected based on his record-breaking performance throughout December, a month in which Manning and the Broncos closed out the regular season with a 13-3 record, leaving them poised as the AFC's No.1 seed heading into the playoffs. Manning also set NFL records by passing for 5,477 yards and 55 touchdowns in a single season. Manning's selection marks the second time he has won the monthly honor in 2013, having previously been honored by the Hickok Belt Award in September.
Other finalists for the month of December in order of how the NSSA voters ranked them included: Kevin Love (basketball), Matt Prater (football), Steven Holcomb (bobsled), Kevin Durant (basketball), Luke Kuechly (football), Patrick Kane (hockey), Martin Jones (hockey), Chris Paul (basketball), and Zach Jonson (golf).
Manning's selection as the Hickok Belt Award winner for December 2013 recognizes him as "the best of the best" in professional sports for the month and confirms the field of candidates to be considered in naming the overall Hickok Belt Award winner for 2013. The final contenders for the 2013 Hickok Belt Award are: Miguel Cabrera, Joe Flacco, Colin Kaepernick, LeBron James, Jimmie Johnson, Peyton Manning, Phil Mickelson, and David Ortiz. Voting will be conducted by members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in the coming weeks with the announcement date still to be determined.
