EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 01/17/14 -- Public Safety Canada
The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, Minister Responsible for Northern Alberta and MP for Edmonton-Spruce Grove, on behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today announced $5,207,212 in federal funding over five years for a new crime prevention program WrapED, that will help at-risk youth in Edmonton.
WrapED, run by REACH Edmonton Council for Safe Communities, will provide comprehensive support and engagement to Aboriginal and refugee youth aged 12-17 who are most at risk of involvement with gangs. By promoting community involvement, education, and counselling programs, the project will help youth avoid gang crime related activities, disengage from gangs, and increase cultural and community connections.
-- From April 2012 to March 2013, the Harper Government funded 105 active, multi-year community-based crime prevention projects through the National Crime Prevention Centre, in which more than 16,000 at-risk youth participated. -- Our Government has also committed $7.5 million per year in ongoing funding to support the Youth Gang Prevention Fund. This fund invests in communities where youth gangs are an existing or emerging threat, and supports initiatives that clearly target youth in gangs or at greatest risk of joining gangs.
"Our Government is preventing gang crime and improving the safety of our communities. Through this project, youth are gaining life skills that help them make smart choices, and avoid gangs and a life of crime. Crime prevention programs such as this one will help us continue to fight crime, and make our streets and communities safe for Canadians."
The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
"This Government continues to build safer communities for Canadians through projects such as this one that will help at-risk youth from getting involved in gangs. Our Government's support for this project will provide the necessary tools to at-risk youth, and help prevent crime and reduce gang activity in Edmonton."
The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health
"WrapEd addresses the unique needs of diverse youth in Edmonton by giving them the support that they need to get out of gangs. We are proud of the invaluable partnership that has been established with key frontline agencies that will ensure a truly effective wraparound approach to help some of our city's most vulnerable youth."

The web app is Agile. The REST API is Agile. The testing and planning are Agile. But alas, Data infrastructures certainly are not. Once an application matures, changing the shape or indexing scheme of data often forces at best a top down planning exercise and at worst includes schema changes which force downtime. The time has come for a new approach that fundamentally advances the agility of distributed data infrastructures. Come learn about a new solution to the problems faced by software orga...

The OpenStack cloud operating system includes Trove, a database abstraction layer. Rather than applications connecting directly to a specific type of database, they connect to Trove, which in turn connects to one or more specific databases. One target database is Postgres Plus Cloud Database, which includes its own RESTful API. Trove was originally developed around MySQL, whose interfaces are significantly less complicated than those of the Postgres cloud database. In his session at 16th Cloud...

While great strides have been made relative to the video aspects of remote collaboration, audio technology has basically stagnated. Typically all audio is mixed to a single monaural stream and emanates from a single point, such as a speakerphone or a speaker associated with a video monitor. This leads to confusion and lack of understanding among participants especially regarding who is actually speaking. Spatial teleconferencing introduces the concept of acoustic spatial separation between confe...

There is no question that the cloud is where businesses want to host data. Until recently hypervisor virtualization was the most widely used method in cloud computing. Recently virtual containers have been gaining in popularity, and for good reason. In the debate between virtual machines and containers, the latter have been seen as the new kid on the block – and like other emerging technology have had some initial shortcomings. However, the container space has evolved drastically since coming on...

Even though it’s now Microservices Journal, long-time fans of SOA World Magazine can take comfort in the fact that the URL – soa.sys-con.com – remains unchanged. And that’s no mistake, as microservices are really nothing more than a new and improved take on the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) best practices we struggled to hammer out over the last decade. Skeptics, however, might say that this change is nothing more than an exercise in buzzword-hopping. SOA is passé, and now that people are ...

The Domain Name Service (DNS) is one of the most important components in networking infrastructure, enabling users and services to access applications by translating URLs (names) into IP addresses (numbers). Because every icon and URL and all embedded content on a website requires a DNS lookup loading complex sites necessitates hundreds of DNS queries. In addition, as more internet-enabled ‘Things' get connected, people will rely on DNS to name and find their fridges, toasters and toilets. Acco...
