HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale and Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder are very pleased with Judge McGinley's decision today, striking down the costly and unnecessary Voter ID Law as unconstitutional, citing the inherent threat to the rights of legitimate voters.
"It is no surprise that this law has been ruled unconstitutional. Our voting laws are supposed to protect our rights and assure free and fair elections. The Voter ID Law, on the other hand, was a thinly veiled attempt by the extreme right-wing groups to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters who don't agree with their unpopular agenda. This ruling is another important step in protecting the right to vote for all citizens," said President Bloomingdale.
"It is unfortunate that so many voters have already been disenfranchised due to the confusion caused by this unconstitutional attack on voting rights. This law was always a solution in search of a problem that doesn't exist. Governor Corbett claims that he didn't raise taxes but his costly voter disenfranchisement schemes are costing taxpayers millions in litigation costs. This money could have gone to educate our children. We urge the Commonwealth to abandon any appeals, and accept today's ruling," Secretary-Treasurer Snyder added.
