E-Learning Course Could Provide the Solution to the NHS’ Failure to Accurately Record Elective Waiting Times

An e-learning course designed to improve understanding and compliance with the NHS' 18 Week Referral to Treatment standard could help address elective waiting time issues highlighted in a report published by the National Audit Office today.

Under NHS guidelines introduced in 2008, NHS Trusts are required to treat patients within 18 weeks of their initial referral.

The NAO report reviewed 650 cases across seven Trusts, and found that more than half were either recorded incorrectly or had no documented evidence to support the reported waiting time.

Of the 369 cases in which inconsistencies were found, 167 were 'incorrectly reported'. It has also been found that 58 NHS Trusts breached the 18 Week standard for at least one month in 2012-13.

The failure to accurately record the 18 Week Referral to Treatment waiting times has been partially attributed to a lack of education on when a hospital can stop, restart or pause the clock. One of the recommendations made by the NAO is that NHS Trusts should ensure that hospital staff are properly trained in the measurement and recording of waiting times in line with national rules.

Improving treatment for patients
18WeekeLearning (http://www.18weekelearning.com/), a course designed by two experienced NHS professionals, is one potential solution to this education gap.

The online course provides NHS staff with an understanding of the 18 Week Referral to Treatment rules and standards.

The course has been devised by Karen Hyde and Nicola Cooper, who both have extensive experience in improving standards in the NHS. Nicola Cooper has spent the past 7 of her 19 years within the NHS working with Trusts to achieve the 18 Week standard, while Karen Hyde has 9 years of experience and recently led an NHS Teaching Hospital to full compliance with 18 weeks.

"We have developed this NHS training course to provide patients with the right to be treated as per the NHS constitution," said Karen Hyde.
