Southeast Asia Market is Expected to Remain Upbeat While East Asia and ANZ Markets Would be Sluggish

This research service analyses the switchgear market in Asia-Pacific and analyzes the current conditions and future market opportunities. Switchgear market is discussed in details at the regional level and market revenue forecasts are provided for each country. High voltage, medium voltage and low voltage switchgears are the key product segments. Drivers and restraints affecting market revenues, OEMs' presence in the market, and their market share breakdown have been provided at the regional level. The base year for the study is 2013, and forecast period is from 2014 to 2018.

Executive Summary

•In 2013, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) switchgear market, with a revenue of $X million, shrunk byX%.
•Japan had the largest switchgear market in 2013 with a revenue of $X million. However, the Vietnamese switchgear market witnessed the fastest growth, expanding at X% in the calendar year of 2013 with a revenue size of $X million.
•Heavy investment in power transmission and distribution (T&D) sector in the countries of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is expected to drive the Southeast Asian (SEA) market at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) ofX% from 2013-2018.
•Japanese and Australian switchgear markets shrunk by X% and X% respectively in 2013 due to low spending by the utilities sector of both the countries. However, for the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), the market is likely to grow from 2015 owing to the reprise of demand from the replacement market.
•The switchgear replacement markets of South Korea, Taiwan and New Zealand are likely to make significant revenue contributions.
•Industries such as steel, oil and gas, mining and manufacturing are expected to drive the SEA market in the forecast period.

Market Dynamics
The APAC switchgear market reported mixed results in 2013. The SEA market showed promising growth but the mature markets of East Asia and Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) declined for the second time in the past two years. Major market dynamics that are likely to impact to the APAC switchgear market are as follows:
•Investment in power infrastructure development, which includes generation, transmission and distribution, will create opportunities for the switchgear market.
•Power network replacement market and industry development programs will increase the sale of switchgears.
•Slow down in the global economy, incursion of low-priced Chinese products, and cash-stripped utilities will restrain market expansion.

CEO's Perspective

1. Vietnam and Indonesia are two of the fastest-growing switchgear markets in the APAC region.
2. Cutting down production cost by adopting innovative methods would lend OEMs the competitive edge, especially in SEA.
3. Energy-efficient switchgears will be favored by power utilities. OEMs must also invest in improving after-sales services.
4. Low growth in East Asia and ANZ markets is likely to create opportunities for mergers and acquisitions.
5. Japanese OEMs are likely to outsource and internationalize their business at lower end of the value chain to make their products more cost competitive.

Market Overview—Definitions

Introduction
Switchgear is a generic term. It is defined as an assembly of switching and interrupting devices, along with control, metering, protective, and regulating equipment. Important components of switchgear are as follows:
•Switching and interrupting devices are used to turn the power on or off. These include circuit breakers or disconnectors.
•Control devices are used to check and/or regulate the flow of power.
•Metering devices are used to measure the flow of electric power.
•Protective devices are used to protect devices against power interruption and faults; and limit damage to equipment.

Classification of Switchgear

Low Voltage Switchgear
Low voltage switchgears have rating below 1kV. This includes air circuit breakers (ACBs), molded case circuit breakers (MCCBs), miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), residual current devices (RCDs), contactors, and relays.

Medium Voltage Switchgear
Medium voltage switchgears are used in the utilities sector and other large industries to control the supply of electric power to various equipment such as transformers, motors, capacitors or to other distribution feeders. Voltage rating ranges between X kV and XkV. This segment includes air insulated switchgears (AIS) and gas insulated switchgears (GIS).

High Voltage Switchgear
High voltage switchgears are used in the utilities sector to transmit power from the generating point to distant load centers and industries. Voltage rating are above XkV. This segment also includes AIS and GIS.

Definitions of some of the major products are given below.

Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) Circuit Breakers:
In SF6 circuit breakers the arc-quenching medium, which is also the insulating medium, is SF6 gas. SF6 circuit breakers operate on either of the two below mentioned principles. In Puffer principle, piston-cylinder arrangement is used to compress the SF6 gas. In the self-blast principle, high pressure is generated during the fault current. SF6 gas leakage is monitored by a gas-pressure switch or a density switch that raises an alarm when the pressure inside the breaker poles drops beyond the permissible limit. On-site topping up of SF6 gas is possible with the help of a refilling kit. The operating life of a SF6 circuit breaker is shorter than vacuum circuit breaker (VCB).

Air Insulated Circuit Breakers:
Air insulated circuit breakers are larger than SF6 circuit breakers due to the large clearance space required inside the interrupting chamber owing to the low dielectric property of air. The operating life of AIS is shorter than that of SF6 circuit breakers.

Air Circuit Breakers (ACBs):
ACBs are circuit protection devices that have air as an insulating medium.

Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs):
MCCBs are circuit protection devices that have their current carrying parts, mechanisms, and trip devices enclosed within a molded case of insulating material.

Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs):
MCBs are small trip switches that become functional when there is an overload and are used to protect an electric circuit as an alternative to fuse.

Residual Current Devices (RCDs):
RCDs protect against indirect contact electric shock. They are designed to detect residual current (earth leakage current), compare it to a reference value, and open the protected circuit when it exceeds the reference value. RCDs are also known as earth leakage circuit breakers (ELCBs) or residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs).

Contactors:
Contactors are devices used to energize and de-energize an electrical circuit. They are often used along with an overload relay to act as a starter for remote operations of a motor.
