Invitation to Art Souterrain

MONTREAL, Jan. 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ - We are pleased to invite you to Art Souterrain, this winter's contemporary art festival based in Montreal, which will be back for its 6th edition from March 1st to March 16th 2014. Nearly 100 works of art, by emerging and established international artists, like Bertrant Carrière, Hannah Claus, Martine Viale, Mathieu Valade and Glenda Leon ( the names will be revealed  February 18th ), will be on display throughout a 7-kilometer underground pathway, linking 14 buildings, in downtown Montreal.

The selected artists will expose their various projects and artworks exploring this year's theme: Foundations, which evokes the redefinition of cultural and identity referents, the disruption of secular traditions inside communities and the influence of migration on the individual's behaviour.

To gain a greater understanding of the importance of foundations in today's society, Art Souterrain focuses a large part of its 2014 edition on First Nations contemporary art. Under the direction of curator and internationally renowned artist Nadia Myre, a delegation of Canadian native artists will showcase their ideas and views on Foundations, an especially relevant theme in aboriginal society.

30% of the festival's exhibition space is committed to emerging artists, a status that will be visible on all the organisation's various media as well as in the physical exhibition spaces. Furthermore, in 2014, Art Souterrain will develop its formula to host a larger set of new, free activities, in addition to renewing last year's popular ones. This includes the festival's artistic contest, Mail Art, and its nocturnal treasure hunt, Ticket to the Arts.

ART SOUTERRAIN, a non-profit organization founded in 2009, showcases each year international contemporary art institutions, artists, and the architectural and cultural heritage of downtown Montreal's underground city. As a unique contemporary art festival in North America, Art Souterrain aims to make art accessible to a wider audience by taking it out of it's traditional exhibition spaces. In 2014, the festival aims to pursue its objective of always offering more to our artists, our platforms and our public.
