University of Phoenix and ASIS Foundation Announce Six Full-Tuition Scholarships to Security Professionals in 2014

University of Phoenix and the ASIS Foundation today announced six full-tuition scholarships for security management professionals engaged in the protection of their organizations' assets—people, property and information. The scholarships build on the ASIS Foundation’s commitment to research, education and future workforce development.

“We look forward to awarding scholarships to security professionals who represent the best and brightest from the security sector—those with a commitment to advancing their knowledge, skills and abilities in the practice of security,” said Dr. Linda Florence, Ph.D., CPP, president, ASIS Foundation Board of Trustees.

Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to complete an undergraduate or master’s degree program at University of Phoenix’s online campus or any of its ground campuses.

ASIS is committed to the success of security professionals and their overall growth in the field. Scholarship recipients will be chosen by an ASIS member and staff panel, which will evaluate applications and essays submitted by scholarship candidates.

“The ASIS Foundation is at the forefront of a rapidly changing, vital field, which spans public and private enterprise. We are extremely gratified to collaborate with their experts to not only advance training for these scholarship recipients, but to enhance our own instructional design in our School of Business, College of Criminal Justice and Security and College of Information Systems and Technology,” said Dr. Bill Pepicello, president of University of Phoenix.

“Through our collaboration with University of Phoenix, we have the ability to offer professionals from across the industry a unique opportunity to achieve their academic and career goals, and in turn increase the stature and professionalism of the security practitioner,” added Florence.

Security industry executives and educational leaders recently addressed the top security risks and workforce skills required in a report released by the ASIS Foundation and University of Phoenix. The report features key insights from security industry executives and thought leaders from higher education and government about how best to address the risks and talent deficits facing the $350 billion U.S. security industry.

“Today’s security professionals must possess knowledge and skills related to both physical security and technology to effectively do their jobs,” said Richard E. Widup, Jr., CPP, president, ASIS International. “These professionals may be charged with protecting physical or intellectual property, supply chain integrity, financial assets, enterprise data, or even the human capital of their organizations—duties that are complicated by the inherent risks posed by mobile technologies, globalization, natural disasters and crime, among others.”

The security devil is always in the details of the attack: the ones you've endured, the ones you prepare yourself to fend off, and the ones that, you fear, will catch you completely unaware and defenseless. The Internet of Things (IoT) is nothing if not an endless proliferation of details. It's the vision of a world in which continuous Internet connectivity and addressability is embedded into a growing range of human artifacts, into the natural world, and even into our smartphones, appliances, a...
