SOASTA, the leader in cloud and mobile testing, today announced the results of the Sochi Olympics Second Screen Survey, which shows that 34% of smartphone/tablet owners plan to use apps while watching the Sochi Winter Olympics.
As the industry leaders in cloud testing for mobile apps, SOASTA commissioned the study to raise awareness around app user behavior ahead of one of the world’s largest sporting events. The survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Poll on behalf of SOASTA from January 14-16, 2014 among 2,035 adults ages 18 and older, among which 1,289 are smartphone/tablet owners.
While watching the Olympics, American smartphone/tablet owners who plan on watching the Sochi Winter Olympics plan to use their smartphones and tablets for the following activities:
- Check event results (32%)
- Watch highlights (22%)
- Get scores and results through social media (22%)
- Stream coverage of the games (13%)
Of smartphone/tablet owners, social media, including Facebook and Twitter, were most often identified as apps they plan on using during the Sochi Winter Olympics (21%), beating out news (15%) and sports (12%) apps. Other popular app categories included:
- Weather (11%)
- Games (11%)
- Video (10%)
- Food delivery (4%)
- Gambling (2%)
- Dating (2%)
SOASTA’s data backs up findings from last month that show how second screen is becoming quickly integrated into the overall sports viewing experience, especially with a younger demographic. While women ages 55-64 who are smartphone/tablet owners are more likely to watch the Olympics (79%) than women age 18-44 (55%), millennial men (ages 18-34) (47%) are more likely to use any apps while watching the events than men age 45+. Surprisingly, millennial men who are smartphone/tablet owners are more likely to use gambling apps (7%) than men age 45-64 (0%) while watching Olympic coverage, followed by women ages 55-64 (6%).
This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Poll on behalf of SOASTA from January 14-16, 2014 among 2,035 adults ages 18 and older (among which 1,289 are smartphone/tablet owners).
