Shared Spectrum Company Names Mike Daniels and Bill Merritt to Board of Directors

Shared Spectrum Company (SSC), the leading innovator of Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) and wireless Spectrum Intelligence technology, today announced that it has named Michael A. Daniels, who led Network Solutions, Mobile365 and the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC); and William J. Merritt, president and CEO of InterDigital (Nasdaq:IDCC), to its board of directors.

Daniels and Merritt are recognized for their leadership in the both the commercial and government technology sectors, particularly with regard to wireless communications, and they have hands-on experience growing companies to the top of their industries. Their experience in forming strategic relationships, combined with their guidance for driving high-tech growth will help catapult SSC’s wireless spectrum solutions to the forefront of the government and commercial wireless markets.

“We are honored to have Mike and Bill join our board of directors,” said Thomas Stroup, SSC’s CEO. “They bring a wealth of industry knowledge and business expertise that will be very valuable to SSC as we expand our wireless spectrum intelligence solutions in both government and commercial markets and strengthen our position as an innovation leader.”

Daniels served as chairman of Network Solutions Inc. (NSI) from 1995 to 2000. He led NSI through a successful initial public offering in 1997, a second offering in 1999, and a follow-on offering of $2.3 billion in 2000. Five years after he led the purchase of NSI, he was instrumental in the company's sale on SAIC's behalf for $19.6 billion. His DoD experience includes working with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on numerous international commissions and advisory boards; and the United States Trade Representatives International Investment Policy Advisory Commission; as well as serving as a U.S. National Commissioner to UNESCO; a senior White House advisor on international technology; and, a senior advisor to the National Security Council. Daniels has served as CEO, chairman or board member at companies that were successfully acquired, including Apogen Technologies, GlobalLogic and Mobile365. He currently serves as chairman of Logistics Management Institute and Invincea; and is on the board of directors of the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC), the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, the Boy Scouts of America National Capital Area Council, Mercury Computer Systems and CACI International.

“Working in conjunction with DARPA and other government agencies, SSC has pioneered vital spectrum sensing technologies that benefit the Defense Department’s communications systems at a time when managing spectrum and adapting to both friendly and unfriendly RF jamming is critical to the nation’s defense,” said Daniels. “I look forward to working with the SSC team to expand the use of its pioneering solutions.”

Prior to becoming president and CEO of InterDigital in 2005, Merritt was the company’s general patent counsel for four years and played a key role in building a program of licensing InterDigital’s intellectual property and overseeing the growth in its patent licensing business. Prior to joining InterDigital in 1996, he served as assistant general counsel with the Long Island Lighting Company. Earlier in his career, Merritt concentrated his engineering efforts with Public Service Electric and Gas Company and Stone & Webster. Merritt earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Juris Doctorate from Temple University.

“Spectrum sharing is vital to our nation’s future, as demand for spectrum continues to grow with businesses and consumers becoming more reliant on their smartphones, tablets and mobile broadband access in every facet of their lives,” said Merritt. “SSC’s innovations in spectrum sharing technology, some of which have been integrated into InterDigital’s dynamic spectrum platforms, are primed to fuel even greater growth in the wireless market. I am honored to work with the company to help realize the value of their innovative technologies.”
