Note: The following is a shameless promotion for @ThingsExpo, an event for which I am serving as Conference Chair. I'm promoting because I think the Internet of Things (IoT) is the biggest thing since the invention of fire - or at least, the best thing since canned beer.
Seriously, the sensor-driven IoT is already setting datacenter builders' hearts a'flutter. The magnitudes more dataflow and processing, memory, and storage requirements it implies should be enough to spark a worldwide economic uptick, in my opinion. It also lets we human beings take another shot at solving our huge, intrinsic problem.
Think Big -- Then Think Bigger
Think Internet of Things.Think @ThingsExpo
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the biggest idea since the creation of the Worldwide Web more than 20 years ago. Why? Because the "things" are not just desktops, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. The "things" come from the world of sensor-driven Big Data that is even now expanding the size of the Web beyond what we thought just a few years ago.
How big? Estimates from everyone from Gartner to the US Government foresee a 100X increase in Web traffic over the next few years. The world will need hundreds of billions of dollars of new servers, memory, storage, and data centers. The challenge to software developers will be increasing as never before.
The Zettabyte Era
In the early 1980s, Bill Gates famously said he saw no reason a PC would need more than 640K of memory. Bill was right at the time.
But today our smart devices have many gigabytes of memory and storage. A typical iPad, iPhone, or Galaxy device will have 100,000X the resources of what we expected 30 years ago.
That's nothing! Because we are rapidly entering the age of the Zettabyte -- a measure that is 1 trillion gigabytes.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is responsible. Adding thousands -- and sometimes millions -- of sensors to devices, buildings, and entire communities means we can now solve the Big Problems -- health care, the environment, population growth. You know, the Fate of the Earth.
The Web is already handling close to a Zettabyte of information each year. Within just a few years, there will be dozens of Zettabytes in data flows and storage throughout the world.
The IoT and the Zettabyte Era provide the greatest opportunity ever for hardware designers and producers, software developers, enterprise technology deployers, and consumers.
What to do? Attend @ThingsExpo in New York June 10-12. We have the rockstar faculty that more than 100,000 past Cloud Expo attendees have come to expect. And a keynote panel that will set the world standard for IoT brilliance.
Come to @ThingsExpo to get your front-row seat. The IoT and Zettabyte Era have begun. Be there.
