OAKLAND, Calif., Feb. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Kenneth Rainin Foundation (the "Foundation") is pleased to announce the Imagining Central Market initiative. San Francisco's Central Market neighborhood is in the midst of transformation into a vibrant hub for arts, culture, entertainment and innovation. To build on this momentum, the Foundation is seeking creative proposals for impactful arts programming that will contribute to the area's identity as an evolving arts and technology district.
The Foundation is especially interested in large scale, widely accessible art projects that will create connections and interaction among businesses, residents, tourists and community organizations. Applicants should focus on the theme of Imagining Central Market as a way to explore concepts of identity and place. Qualified projects may include interactive light, media or visual art installations of the highest caliber.
"The Kenneth Rainin Foundation's support for this initiative is guided by a desire to help revitalize San Francisco's Central Market District in equitable ways," said Rivkah Beth Medow, Kenneth Rainin Foundation Board member. "We are so excited about Imagining Central Market because it builds on the Foundation's investments in this area and uses art and technology to foster community identity and invigorate the neighborhood."
One-page Letters of Inquiry should describe the proposed project and how it will engage and explore the diversity and identity of the Central Market District. Successful applicants will demonstrate the vision, past experience and professional qualifications required to create and manage a large scale art project. Priority will be given to proposals that involve cross-sector collaboration.
"This initiative was designed to facilitate partnership between the arts and technology sectors as well as to engage the larger community," says Shelley Trott, Senior Program Officer for Arts. "We envision a vibrant and collaborative installation that will energize the Central Market corridor and draw new interest and traffic to the area."
The Foundation will accept submissions online February 10 through April 4, 2014. Up to ten finalists will be selected to submit full applications and will receive $1,000 per project to further develop their proposals. A cross-sector panel will review the final proposals and recommend one project to the Foundation's Board of Directors for the $100,000 grant. The winner will be announced August 2014.
This grant opportunity is open to non-profit organizations, socially minded for-profit organizations, and individual artists or projects with a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor. Lead organizations must operate and reside in Alameda, Marin, Santa Clara and San Francisco counties.
