Shifts in Polar Vortex Lead to Heater Shortages in Texas

Repeated waves of Arctic air have put a strain on heating systems in the Southwest.

WACO, Texas, Feb. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Waves of cold air Arctic air sweeping across the United States have led to heater shortages throughout Texas, according to local HVAC experts.    Caused by changes in the "polar vortex," the weather pattern has brought repeated waves of snow, freezing rain and ice to many Texas cities this winter, and put a strain on area heating systems.

"Right now it's hard to buy a replacement heater, or even get parts to fix a broken heating system," says Shane McCourt, regional sales manager for Portable Rental Solutions (www.PortableRentalSolutions.com).

McCourt says that it can be difficult to find a repair technician during a cold wave, when heavy use causes many systems to fail. Even under normal weather it can take days for the technician to order replacement parts.  With record-breaking cold waves affecting much of the country, replacement parts have been even harder to find.

McCourt, whose company rents portable, self-contained heating and cooling systems, says his business is seeing unprecedented demand.

"Each time the forecast drops below freezing in Dallas or Austin, I know the phones will be ringing," says McCourt.

Despite local shortages, McCourt says his company still has an ample supply of temporary heaters.

"It's our business to be prepared for this sort of thing," says McCourt.

Portable Rental Solution's self-contained heat pumps and electric heaters can heat construction sites, warehouses and offices without venting combustion gases. It's systems range from 18,000 BTU heat pumps to high-BTU indirect fired heaters like the 500,000 BTU IDF-500. The company's electric heaters come with a guaranteed temperature rise in two hours, even for large spaces such as warehouses.
