SYOSSET, N.Y., Feb. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- As the nation approaches the 70th anniversary of the D-Day assault on the Normandy coast during World War II, Blumenfeld Development Group, Ltd. (BDG) of Syosset, N.Y. www.bdg.net has announced that it is sponsoring tribute programs to the GIs who helped kicked down the door of Nazi Europe and end the horrors of the Third Reich.
Brad Blumenfeld, BDG vice president, www.linkedin.com/pub/brad-blumenfeld/46/118/9a8 stated, "In a nation that far too often fails to recall the individual acts of heroism that ensured our freedoms, this upcoming D-Day anniversary is a crucial date in America's history, and we have a collective responsibility to remember."
BDG www.bdg.net is sponsoring a program that encourages individuals to write essays about family members who were in America's military or were defense workers during that era and submit them to the Museum of American Armor, care of Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, New York 11804. The essays can include copies of vintage photos, commendations, personal letters and other supportive documents that help tell the story of the American experience from an individual's perspective. A dozen winners will be selected to ride in period armor with living historians on or about June 6th, the anniversary of D-Day. Essays will be accepted now through May 8th.
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano commended the sponsorship program, noting, "We are coming to a point in time when far too many of those who faced combat during this period of history are no longer with us. It becomes that much more important to look back into our personal family archives and reflect on who our parents and grandparents were and what they accomplished. This program and this museum does exactly that."
The Museum of American Armor www.museumofamericanarmor.org is in the midst of building a 25,000 square foot facility at Old Bethpage Village Restoration through a public private partnership where it will not only honor every American G.I. but will strengthen Nassau County's tourism and destination industry, providing a new source of revenue for the county's park system. It reflects an effective multi-purposing of OBVR that has won the endorsement of the History Channel as it campaigns to preserve our nation's history.
At the urging of the County Executive more than 25 operational WW II vehicles in the museum's collection have the ability to create an armored column that replicates the sights and sounds of American forces during World War II. Place the armor in a setting of vintage farmhouses and country roads reminiscent of the WWII era Normandy countryside, and one has walked into a virtual time machine that puts visitors in touch with the heroes in their own families. While based in its new facility, armor will operate in the village setting several times a year in concert with living historians so that visitors can capture the sights and sounds of Europe in 1944.
