Forensic technologies are used for the identification, analysis and evaluation of physical evidence gathered from the crime scene. The collected and analyzed forensic evidence is in turn used in criminal law to prove the guilt or innocence of the defendant. It is oft-quoted in crime/law enforcement fields that, a zero crime rate is a hypothetical situation. Consequently the forensic technologies/services witness a near-perennial demand (although the growth rate may vary depending on all other variables/factors).

The United Nations (UN), European Union (EU) and Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), U.S., have collectively classified physical crime into: Drug offences (includes the illegal possession, cultivation, production, supplying, transportation, importing, exporting and financing of drug operations); Homicide (includes intentional killing of a person/s, including murder, manslaughter, euthanasia and infanticide); Violent crime (physical assault, robbery (stealing by force or threat of force) and sexual offences (including rape and sexual assault)); Property crime (includes domestic burglary and theft of a motor vehicle).

Although, end-to-end analysis of a physical crime case requires a combination of forensic technologies/services, a particular type of physical crime identified can be forensically analyzed by using one major forensic technology/service. For example, Chemicals (drugs/explosives/toxicology) can be analyzed by
chromatography/spectrometry/spectrophotometry/emission spectroscopy. DNA Profiles can be forensically analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) method, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, short tandem repeat (STR), mtDNA Profiling and DNA Chip technology.

The forensic technologies market can thus be segmented into types of forensic technologies/services delivered namely, DNA profiling, biometrics/fingerprints analysis, chemical (drugs/explosives/toxicology) analysis and firearms identification and analysis.

Currently, in terms of geography, developed regions such as North America and Europe have a higher market share; but going forward till 2019, Asia-Pacific and RoW regions are expected to gain about 60% market share. Many of the forensic technologies/services such as DNA profiling, biometrics/fingerprints and firearms identification are standardized and automated in North America and Europe. This is likely to result in lower spend/cost per end-to-end crime case analysis and resolution, a decline in value of forensic technologies/services and reduced overall market in terms of value.
