SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 02/18/14 -- Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
The Honourable Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, P.C., Q.C., M.P., Minister of National Revenue, celebrated the anniversary of the opening of the Surrey Tax Centre today, 35 years to the day the Centre officially opened its doors on February 18, 1979. The Minister marked the occasion with a tour of the facility and meetings with employees of the Tax Centre.
The Surrey Tax Centre provides local employment to 800 staff year-round and up to another 300 term employees during peak individual tax filing season. Over the years, it has been a stable employer in the community. Nine employees have been working at the tax centre since it opened in 1979.
Last year, as a group, the Surrey Tax Centre exceeded their goal for the Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign (GCWCC) by 21%, earning the United Way Employee Silver Award. Year-round, the Charities Committee demonstrates their commitment to their community by coordinating contributions to the Food Bank, Basic for Babies, and toys for the Christmas Bureau.
Over its 35-year history, the Tax Centre has become a focus of expertise on many fronts, including the delivery of compliance activities such as the Voluntary Disclosures Program and the Pacific Region's recently created Business Intelligence and Quality Assurance Division. The Centre acts as a part of the Pacific Region's Appeals Western Intake Centre, and participates in many joint initiatives with the BC Ministry of Revenue, such as One-stop Business Registration and the BC Training Tax Credit. Staff with the Tax Centre's Benefit Programs administer nine Provincial and Territorial credits for British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and the Yukon Territory.
-- A major renovation of the Surrey Tax Centre was completed in 2006. This included seismic improvements, architectural upgrades and a reconfiguration and upgrade of the Centre's data/telecommunication cabling systems, resulting in maximum flexibility and connectivity for the Canada Revenue Agency's programs. -- The building itself is 293,000 square feet or the equivalent of 5 CFL football fields. -- The Surrey Tax Centre processed approximately 4 million T1 (individual) tax returns during the 2013 filing season, of which 76% were electronic returns and 24% were paper returns. -- It processed approximately 340,000 T2 (corporation) tax returns for the 2013 filing season. Tax Centre employees also processed 1.5 million GST returns in the 2012-2013 year.
"I am honoured to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Surrey Tax Centre. It marks a significant milestone for Surrey and the Lower Mainland, where the Tax Centre is recognized as one of the region's most significant employers."
"Over the last 35 years, the Surrey Tax Centre has evolved from a one dimensional paper processing operation to a centre for trusted tax and benefit administration, providing jobs, unparalleled service, and value to taxpayers and the community."
