HOBOKEN, N.J., Feb. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- In 1964 when President Lyndon Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act, it sparked the creation of what has become HOPES CAP, Inc. (HOPES), a Community Action Agency in northern New Jersey. The non-profit organization was given the tall task to combat poverty in Hoboken and provide a variety of social services throughout Hudson County. Fifty years later their impact and stories are vast.
"When I think about what our agency has accomplished in half a century, I am in awe," said Ora Welch, President/CEO of HOPES CAP, Inc. "The numerous obstacles our community has had to overcome has ranged from job losses from economic shifts such as recessions and high inflation to natural disasters like the recent massive flooding brought on by Hurricane Sandy," she added.
Based in Hoboken, NJ, a city situated directly across from Manhattan at the mouth of New York Harbor, HOPES' motto remains the same over the last five decades: "Help people to help themselves in achieving self-sufficiency." The agency is committed to the mission of providing programs that respond to the social, educational, and training needs of low-income individuals in Hoboken, Plainfield and Jersey City.
The agency plans community-wide celebrations throughout the year to commemorate their milestone. Events will include a multitude of activities to interest citizens of all ages.
