AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Texas Civil Justice League Political Action Committee (TCJL PAC) is pleased to announce its 2014 statewide slate of judicial candidates for the March primary election. TCJL PAC--a bipartisan organization that supports an impartial and qualified judiciary--has endorsed four incumbent Supreme Court Justices, in addition to four judicial candidates in the Republican and Democratic primaries.
"The judiciary plays a critical role in our democracy, and we support judges who take that seriously," Lisa Kaufman, general counsel for TCJL, said. "Strict interpretation of the law is essential to ensure we retain all of the legal reform and legislative progress we have made in the last quarter of a century. The future of the Texas judiciary depends on this primary election."
TCJL PAC has endorsed Chief Justice Nathan Hecht, Justice Phil Johnson, Justice Jeff Brown and Justice Jeff Boyd for the Texas Supreme Court.
Serving on the Texas Supreme Court since 1988, Chief Justice Nathan Hecht has 30 years of judicial experience and is recognized as the longest-serving Supreme Court Justice in Texas history.
Justice Phil Johnson has 16 years of appellate judicial experience and was first appointed to the Texas Supreme Court in 2005.
First appointed to the Texas Supreme Court in 2013, Justice Jeff Brown was elected to the 14th Court of Appeals in 2007 and served as district judge in Harris County for six years.
Justice Jeff Boyd served as general counsel to the Governor until his appointment to the Texas Supreme Court in 2012. Justice Boyd does not have a primary opponent in the March primary election.
"The job of the judiciary is to ensure that the law is fairly imposed on our citizens," John Fainter, chairman of the TCJL Executive Committee, said. "To preserve an impartial Supreme Court of Texas, it is vitally important Texans re-elect these experienced and fair judges."
In the Republican primary, TCJL PAC has endorsed Judge Leanne Johnson of the 9th Court of Appeals in Beaumont, Place 3 (incumbent), Judge John Bailey of the 11th Court of Appeals in Eastland, Place 3 (incumbent), and Patricia Grady for district judge in the 212th District Court in Galveston County.
In the Democratic primary, TCJL PAC has endorsed Chief Justice Ann Crawford McClure of the 8th Court of Appeals in El Paso (incumbent).
Additionally, TCJL PAC has endorsed Greg Abbott for governor of Texas and David Dewhurst for re-election as lieutenant governor.
Early voting runs February 18 through 28. The primary election is on March 4.
