VideoSurveillance.com Introduces CommunityCam in Salt Lake City

SLC Poised to Reduce Street Crime with Nearly 600 Surveillance Cameras Mapped on CommunityCam

SALT LAKE CITY and PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- VideoSurveillance.com, a virtual security integrator, today announced the expansion of its CommunityCam initiative to Salt Lake City. CommunityCam is a free crowdsourced security camera map that creates consumer benefit in the network of privately placed cameras. The goal of CommunityCam is to provide local citizens and law enforcement with an innovative tool to anticipate, prevent and solve street crime.

VideoSurveillance.com Expands Its Popular CommunityCam Initiative

In an effort to build safer neighborhoods, VideoSurveillance.com has made CommunityCam a free website for anyone with Internet access. CommunityCam can be used by victims of crime to check for nearby surveillance cameras that may have recorded an incident, simply by visiting http://www.VideoSurveillance.com/CommunityCam. Individuals can then report the location of that camera to the police or ask neighbors for help.

"On the heels of a successful launch of CommunityCam in cities like Denver and San Francisco, we are pleased to announce the expansion of our crime-solving resource to Utahns," said Josh Daniels, president and founder of VideoSurveillance.com. "While crime rate statistics indicate a downward trend over the last 10 years, concern over the rise in violent crime in Salt Lake City continues to run high among residents. It is our hope that CommunityCam will become an important tool for police and citizens alike to solve and prevent future incidents in this community."

CommunityCam users have plotted the location of nearly 600 surveillance cameras in the greater Salt Lake City area to date, and over 8,000 in the U.S overall. Neighborhoods that have been most heavily populated include Downtown Salt Lake City, Murray, West Jordan, South Jordan and Sandy.

Salt Lake City joins other progressive cities, including Denver, Oakland, Philadelphia, Portland, and San Francisco, to help create safer communities. Citizens of these cities have adopted this easy-to-use crowdsourcing tool to map camera locations, including businesses, schools, or any camera visible from public property.  CommunityCam is intended to benefit a broad number of people, including cyclists, runners, and walkers, who are vulnerable to hit-and-run accidents. CommunityCam gives these groups the power to know where cameras are located so they can plan safer, monitored routes in and around the city.
