New Landmark Study Finds 94% of Clinicians Struggle to Pinpoint Occlusion!

BOSTON, Feb. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Landmark study finds 94% of clinicians struggle to pinpoint occlusion using articulating paper alone. In January, The Journal of Craniomandibular Practice released a study by Dr. Robert Kerstein and Dr. John Radke entitled "Clinician Accuracy When Subjectively Interpreting Articulating Paper Markings"*.


The purpose of this study was to determine whether subjective interpretation of paper markings is a reliable method for identifying the relative occlusal force content of tooth contacts.

After presenting six photographs of articulating paper-marked teeth to 295 clinicians, this study reported that 94% were unable to determine high and low occlusal contact forces accurately.

In addition, they found that practice longevity and hours spent in CE courses on occlusion did not affect the outcomes of the study. Proving that, this longstanding method of visually observing articulating paper marks for occlusal contact force content should be replaced with a measurement-based, objective method.
