2013 seems to be another difficult year for Chinese seed enterprises, mainly in view of the intense competition in the domestic corn seed and rice seed markets caused by oversupply. Judging from listed seed enterprises' financial results for the first three quarters of 2013, most of them witnessed decreases in profit or even suffered net losses, compared with general growth of performance in past few years.

For example, Wanxiang Doneed Co., Ltd., Grand Agriseeds Technology, Inc. and Yuan Longping Agriculture Co., Ltd. all saw a significant decrease of net profit in the first three quarters of 2013; Hefei Fengle Seed Co., Ltd., Winall Hi-tech Seed Co., Ltd. and Guansu Dunhuang Seed Co., Ltd. all suffered net losses. On the contrary, Shandong Denghai Seeds Co., Ltd. is expected to achieve a further success in 2013, mainly thanks to its distinctive self-developed corn varieties.

Domestic seed enterprises, especially large ones, seem to continually benefit from favorable government policies such as the Suggestions for Accelerating Development of Modern Crop Seed Industry and the National Development Plan 2012-2020 for Modern Crop Seed Industry. However, most domestic seed enterprises are actually not vibrant enough to compete with multinational giants, mainly due to their weak R&D capacity and monotony development model.
