Low Volatility Indexes: Russell 2000(R) Low Volatility Index Outperformed Russell 2000(R) Index for 2014 Year-to-Date and February Month-to-Date as of February 14

SEATTLE, WA -- (Marketwired) -- 02/21/14 --

The Russell 2000® Low Volatility Index, which seeks to measure the performance of lower volatility stocks within the U.S. small-cap Russell 2000® Index, has outperformed the Russell 2000 Index for 2014 year-to-date and February month-to-date as of February 14.

"Recent index performance, while short-term in nature, illustrates how low volatility indexes may be an effective complement to market cap-based indexes for long-term investors," said David Koenig, CFA, FRM, index investment strategist with Russell Investments. "Low volatility indexes tend to underperform their parent indexes in periods of strong market advances, such as 2013, as would be expected. However, in periods of volatility and over the longer term, they have historically helped to moderate some of the peaks and valleys relative to their parent indexes."

"Index-based investors today have access to an expanded spectrum of innovative indexes to enable a variety of new approaches in the context of a well-diversified investment portfolio," said David Mazza, head of research, SPDR ETFs and SSgA Funds at State Street Global Advisors. "And while one size does not fit all and one should seek advice from a professional financial advisor, the increased ability to blend a variety of active and passive exposures in a long-term investment portfolio can be powerful tool for today's investor."
