LONDON, Feb. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Reportbuyer.com just published a new market research report:

ICT budget and staffing trends in Pharmaceuticals - Enterprise ICT investment plans

Product Synopsis

This report presents the findings from a survey of 102 pharmaceutical companies regarding their Information and Communications Technology (ICT) budgets and staff allocation. The survey investigates how pharmaceutical companies currently allocate their ICT budgets across the core areas of ICT spend, namely hardware, software, IT services, communications and consulting.

Introduction and Landscape

Why was the report written?
In order to provide a depth of insight into ICT vendors' and service providers' potential customers.

What is the current market landscape and what is changing?
Kable's survey shows that overall ICT spending in the pharmaceutical sector is set to increase in 2013 compared to 2012, with the highest proportion of the average ICT budget being allocated to hardware, followed by software and IT services.

What are the key drivers behind recent market changes?
Emerging technology trends such as thin client computing devices, analytical and business intelligence tools, and cloud computing services are heavily influencing ICT investments in the sector. Increasing compliance regulations are also compelling pharmaceutical companies to invest in IT security solutions.

What makes this report unique and essential to read?
Kable Global ICT Intelligence has invested significant resources in order to interview CIOs and IT managers about their IT Budgets. Very few IT analyst houses will have interviewed 100+ ICT decision makers in the pharmaceuticals industry in H2 2012.

Key Market Issues

In order to store and manage the rising volume of clinical data, pharmaceutical companies have been making significant investments in their data centres in 2013.

Pharmaceutical companies are allocating a major portion of their ICT budgets to core ICT infrastructure in order to improve their business processes to respond well in this highly regulated and challenging market place.

With an increasingly geographically dispersed employee base, pharmaceutical companies are keen to invest in network and communications technologies.

The survey also shows that pharmaceutical companies are spending a noticeable portion of their IT services budgets on security and privacy services, in order to maintain a competitive edge amidst increasing regulatory demands for data protection.

The proportional spend with technology (product) vendors and specialist outsourcers are both likely to drop by in 2013 compared to 2012, as companies look to bring more of their ICT investments in-house.

Key Highlights

Kable's survey shows that pharmaceuticals are allocating the highest proportion of their hardware budgets to client computing, followed by network and communications equipment.

In 2012, the highest proportion of total ICT budgets was allocated to data centres (both in-house and hosted), which is set to continue in 2013, with companies allocating a major proportion of their total ICT budgets to their data centres, followed by business applications.

A major proportion of pharmaceutical companies' IT services budgets is being allocated to application development and integration, with pharmaceuticals allocating 18% of their total IT services budgets to this area.

Kable's survey illustrates that a significant portion of pharmaceuticals' telecoms budgets is being assigned to strengthening their voice communications (both mobile and fixed-line) to support their global expansion plans and improve collaboration across a diversified employee base.

Kable's survey indicates that with an average allocation of 15%, enterprise applications constitute the highest proportion of pharmaceutical companies' software budgets. This is likely to continue in 2013, where the total spending on enterprise applications is set to increase by 2%, reaching a value of 17% of the total software budget.
